The great thing about this Dishonored version of the wonderful “Lore In A Minute” YouTube series is that it’s packed full of history you might not have known even if you played through the entire game. Most of this stuff comes from the books and notes you’ll find sprinkled around Dunwall.
Looks like the newest 3DS Zelda game—announced today as a sequel to Link to the Past—really is set in the same exact overworld as that Super Nintendo classic. Clever message board posters on NeoGAF and elsewhere have pieced together this side-by-side comparison of screenshots from the new Zelda‘s trailer and the old Zelda‘s world, and…
I’m not saying all video game trailers should be narrated in jazzy, dulcet tones, but it sure beats dubstep. This promo video for Leviathan: Warships—a strategy game that will be out for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android on April 30—is by far my favorite trailer of 2013 so far. Enjoy it!
Registration for this year’s PAX Prime is now live! Badges will probably go quick, so don’t wait on this one.
Square Enix’s 3DS role-playing game Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is coming to North America next year. Nintendo will publish the game along with Square Enix. Described by some players as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light and a throwback to classic Final Fantasys, Bravely Default has been a critical success…
FINALLY. Nintendo is bringing the beloved RPG Earthbound to the Wii U’s Virtual Console this year. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced the news during the Nintendo Direct presentation this morning. I’m still stunned. Fans have been begging Nintendo to re-release the quirky role-playing game, titled Mother 2 in Japan, for years now, but the Mario…
Well that was unexpected. The 3DS is getting a new game in the Yoshi’s Island platforming series. This is the third Yoshi’s Island game, following the old Super Nintendo version and Yoshi’s Island DS, released in 2006. Nintendo announced the new game during their Nintendo Direct presentation today, promising more information in the near future.
Nintendo is holding a 3DS-centric Nintendo Direct this morning at 10am Eastern. You can watch it live right here. And we’ll be covering all of the news on Kotaku as it happens, of course.
The deadest genre just continues to get deader as three—yes, three!—new Japanese role-playing games hit U.S. shores today. There’s Pandora’s Tower, an action-RPG that might just be the last big Wii release ever. End of an era. I’ve spent a couple hours with Pandora’s Tower, and I think it’s fun so far, although I wish…
Two explosions went off during the Boston Marathon today. Our thoughts go out to everyone. If you’d like to talk about the tragic news, you can do so here.
Nostalgia is a wonderful thing. Everyone loves getting wistful about old games, old experiences, old characters that they worshiped and cherished. It’s fun. What’s less fun is revisiting those old games and finding the flaws you’ve forgotten. I recently re-bought the PS1 classic Final Fantasy IX to play on my Vita, and while it’s a…
The folks behind Skyrim say they’re off to the next adventure, which could very well mean there’s no more content planned for Bethesda’s massive role-playing game. In a blog post today, Bethesda’s Skyrim team writes that they’re moving on: “For the last year and a half we’ve been working on new content for Skyrim; from…
New Nintendo Direct coming Wednesday at 10am Eastern. “Focused on the latest information on 3DS,” Nintendo says.
The lead designer of DayZ is going off to climb mountains. In a post today on the blog for the zombie survival game, which was originally built as a mod for the first-person shooter Arma 2, DayZ designer Dean “Rocket” Hall writes that he’s taking a two-month sabbatical to go climb Mount Everest in Nepal.…
Here’s a new trailer for State of Decay, a ridiculously ambitious RTS/shooter/zombie survival game that will be out this June for XBLA.
This is the newest trailer for Dragon’s Crown, the Vanillaware-developed game that will be out this year for PS3 and Vita. It features the sorceress, one character from the game. As you can see, the sorceress was designed by a 14-year-old boy. Perhaps game development studios should stop hiring teenagers? At least they’re cheap, I…
Here at Random Encounters, we spend a lot of time talking about big JRPGs—the Final Fantasys, the Dragon Quests, the Taleses. NOT TODAY. Today we’re going to talk about the smaller ones. “But wait a minute!” you are almost certainly screaming right now, your hands shaking as you get ready to write an angry comment.…
There’s a new Iwata Asks up on Nintendo’s website with the folks behind Animal Crossing: New Leaf. This time, you get to be mayor!
“The spirits… are dying.” Check out this new US trailer for Tales of Xillia, which comes out for PS3 on August 6. (August 9 in Europe.) Looks good!
In November, just after purchasing LucasFilm, Disney CEO Bob Iger held a company-wide meeting. During the meeting, according to a source in attendance, a few people asked what was going on. What was going to happen to them? What was the future of LucasArts, the LucasFilm subsidiary and 30-year-old video game studio responsible for a…
