Atari Crashes Castles With Its Warlords Remake

The latest classic Atari game to be dragged kicking-and-screaming from our fond memories into the present day, the new version of Warlords marries the wall-busting gameplay of the original with an element of real-time strategy, with a dash of Castle Crashers cuteness thrown in for good measure.


Warlords was once a simple game about hurling flaming rocks at your opponents' castle walls, tearing them down brick-by-brick to get at the soft fleshy bits (Knights and Kings) inside. It's a formula that's worked well, from the 1980 arcade original to the 2008 Xbox Live Arcade HD version.

This new version, due out this summer on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network is a slightly different animal.


On top of calling the shots, players will also find themselves controlling minions, ordering them to capture points or gather power-ups in order to give your side the upper hand over up to four other players online in co-op siege mode, 2v2 or classic free-for-all battles.

Griptonite Games is handling development on this new version of Warlords. They'd better handle it right, because there are plenty of childhood memories riding on this one. Childhood memories capable of firing large, flaming boulders.

I gotta say, I'm still surprised and disappointed there's been no plans to port Castle Crashers to the DS or 3DS. Just add Link as a playable Crasher (complete with Navi "animal orb"), and you're good to go.

Which reminds me; whatever happened to XBLA getting the Pink Knight? :*(
