Sony has today revealed re-iterated which PS1 games will be available, and compatible, for direct download and play on the PlayStation Vita when the handheld’s big 1.80 firmware update hits tomorrow.

Things start out so well! Sony’s Don Mesa says “We are working hard to ensure that all of your favorite PS one Classics titles will be available for download directly on your PS Vita via PlayStation Store (PS Store) as soon as possible.”
But then this.

Oh. Final Fantasy VII is great, as we’ve seen, but that’s it? Nine games? Sony said last week there’d be 100 eventually made available. Meaning we’re likely to see them rolled out tortuously, ala the Wii’s Virtual Console, back in the day when people remembered the Wii even had a Virtual Console.

Also of note, as you’ll see in the video above, is a run-down of some of the new features which will be made available in the Vita’s upgrade, some of which you might not ever notice, but others – like being able to use buttons and the d-pad to navigate system menus – are welcome!
UPDATE – Oh boy. While the American list is pretty damn short, at only 9 games, Europe’s is monstrous. No, really, look at it. It’s like a PS1 wish-list. Metal Gear Solid, WipeOut, Silent Hill….oh boy.
Also, this isn’t a list of all the games coming to European Vitas at some point. It’s all the game’s available at launch, on August 29. Day one.
