The points the article makes about why manual, infrequent saves are good is so often overlooked. The only Tomb Raider I ever really enjoyed was the first one. I believe that was the case because I played it on the Saturn where you had to get to save crystals. When I played later parts on PC I just saved before every hard jump. All the excitement was gone. Of course I could have chosen to save less frequently, but that's not the same as a well curated save point system.
