Surgent Studios’ Tales of Kenzera: Zau was an emotional breakout of The Game Awards. This stunning Metroidvania about a young boy’s journey to revive his dead dad was inspired by the passing of studiofounder Abubakar Salim. Salim previously voiced Assassin’s Creed Origins protagonist Bayek, and wanted to tell a story about grief through this new EA Originals 2D action-platformer. Filled with Bantu lore and imagery, Tales of Kenzera: Zau appears to be one of the few openly Black games of 2024, and I absolutely love to see that.
