Kanye West has a new song. It’s a lot.

Kanye has been having a year. He’s dropped an album, said that slavery was a choice, said that he’d like to have sex with his sisters-in-law, was the creative director of the Pornhub Awards, and now has a video that’s taking the internet by storm.

Let’s start with what we know. 1) This is a new song, debuted at the Pornhub Awards; 2) It features Lil Pump, of “Gucci Gang” fame; 3) It is extremely bad but the beat is hot; 4) It straight up looks like Roblox.

The internet has latched onto that last fact in particular.

Even Ye himself has acknowledged it:

The YouTuber Ramzoid also remade the whole song using only Roblox sound effects. It’s amazing.

There’s still a lot more going on in this video, which features the phrase “I’m a sick fuck, I like a quick fuck,” quite prominently, as well as the huge, weirdass suits.

If you need a palate cleanser now—I sure as hell do—please enjoy this video of Ye and Pump dancing to the Mii Channel Theme from the Wii. That’s how it is on this bitch of an Earth.

DISCUSSION

I continue to be confused by Ye being regarded as a “genius.”

I will never in my life argue that the man is without musical talent—and I still remember exactly where I was sitting when he stood beside Michael Meyers and said, “George Bush does not care about Black people.”

The dude has had a profound impact on American culture; there can be no denying that.

But this whole “tortured genius” schtick feels misapplied, not least because he has yet to produce anything as transcendental as the works of those we generally regard as “tortured geniuses” in the general artistic canon. That may be entirely a function of time, of course; few are those who recognize genius or work that is ahead of its time at the time that it is produced—and it could well be that in generations to come, the work of Kanye will be studied alongside that of the luminaries of his art.

...but, I dunno, from my perspective, he’s largely a talented shit-stirrer that spends more time stirring shit for attention than he does capitalizing on his talent—which is why his connection to the Kardashi-clan makes so goddamned much sense (not that they are particularly talented, but the constant accumulation of attention—positive, negative, and “for the lulz”— fits far too well).

I guess what I’m coming to here is I don’t understand why he continues to generate the interest he does, apart from our tendency, as a species, to be unable to look away from a trainwreck--and I think that says rather more about us than it does him.
