What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Illustration for article titled What Are You Playing This Weekend?

The entire internet is broken. Hopefully it will be fixed this weekend so we can all play some games! Or we could go outside or something. People do that, don’t they?

At long, long last, I have succumbed to my colleagues’ raving and praise and have purchased The Witcher 3, currently on sale on Steam. I’m gonna do it, everyone. Any advice?

What about you? What are you playing this weekend?

Advice on Witcher 3: Take it all in at whatever pace feels comfortable to you. Take your time if you can. It’s much more like a grand, sprawling novel than any open world game I’ve ever played.

The element that raises it far above its peers, for me, is its deep focus on narrative. This is some of the best storytelling in gaming, from the side quests to the main storyline. Almost every mission is an opportunity to be absorbed in superb characters, plots, and surprising little moments of wonder.

Another tip: avoid fast travel except when truly necessary. I can’t think of another game that’s as simply joyful to ride across its world and take in the sights and sounds. Speaking of the sounds: crank it up or use headphones. Simply trotting along a wooded path, you’ll hear wind whistling through the trees, the world feeling alive.

Another: change the UI scale to smaller and stretch it as far to the edges as you can. Otherwise it can feel claustrophobic with all the information on display.

Also, take side quests when you’re just about to the recommended level- that way they’re a challenge and they grant you xp and items that are worthwhile.

I don’t want to go on, but I could. This game is the best thing I’ve played in years. I’ve got 100+ hours into it and feel the itch to go back every time I’m between games.
