"Kinky" Japanese University Gets a New Name

A well-known university outside of Osaka, Japan has changed its English name. The reason? So it won't be confused with perverts.

Previously, Kinki Daigaku* (近畿大学) was known as Kinki University, but as News2U reports, the university is hoping to become more global. Thus, starting in April 2016, its English name will be Kindai University. In Japanese, the school is often referred to as "Kindai," which is a shortened form of Kinki University kind of like "KU." So KU University?

Kinki is a region in Japan that consists of Osaka, Kobe, Nara, and Kyoto (as well as Mie, Wakayama, and Shiga). It's also known as "Kansai" and is the birthplace of Japanese civilization.

Online in Japan, people seem amused that "kinky" means "hentai" in English, with some now calling the school "Hentai Daigaku" or "Pervert University."

Maybe Kinki Kids, a Japanese boy band from Kansai, should change its name, too?
