The Next Big Mobile First-Person Shooter Finally Gets A Name

Gameloft's Modern Combat series may ape Activision's Call of Duty series, but it's definitely not on the same release schedule. Almost a year after the first teaser trailer, the fifth installment of the series has a name: Modern Combat 5: Black Ops — I mean Blackout.

How's that for a name? It's identifying itself all over the place. Now whenever I bug Gameloft PR for news on the title, I can casually refer to it as "Blackout." "Hey, what's the story with Blackout?" I'd ask, and they'd forward me today's press release, which contains the following:

Like fans have seen in some of the earlier demos, the story will indeed begin in Venice, Italy where Phoenix, the main character of the game, is sent on a special operation to secure a transport of WMDs from a particularly well-armed terrorist group. From there the plot will take gamers on a globe-trotting adventure, including a particularly harrowing sequence in Tokyo where Phoenix has to fight amidst total anarchy while trying to convince his allies to accept an uncomfortable secret. By the end, players will have experienced a range of visually-stunning settings, and thrilling action-packed combat sequences.

That's right, the capital of Arizona travels the world, kicking ass and then shooting it, never minding the oppressive heat. I can dig it.
