For years now, fans have wanted Shigesato Itoi to make a new Mother game. It doesn’t sound like it will happen. There’s a reason for that.
In an interview with Game Watch Impress, Itoi said, “When I made 3, I thought I could do it, so I did it,” before adding that 4 was “totally impossible.” This isn’t the first time Itoi has said making a new Mother is “impossible.”
Here’s how Itoi explained his thinking. “Among big-time popstars, if they, you know, put out ten albums, around the fourth album, they can’t make very good songs. The albums sell, but everyone at the concerts wants to hear songs from those first three albums. Everyone.”
“I’m glad that video games are not my profession,” said Itoi, who’s best known in Japan as a copywriter and a commentator. “If it was my job, I would’ve already made 4 and 5.”
Guess the world will have to just make due with those first three Mother games, because it sounds like that’s all we will get—fan games, notwithstanding.
