Sources tell us that the upcoming Call of Duty 5 game in development is already playable, and currently going through quality assurance.
Treyarch is also said to be the developer, and the title, we're told, is set in a WWII Pacific environment and will be using Call of Duty 4's engine, the same engine on which the upcoming James Bond: Quantum of Solace movie game is being built.
Yesterday, on the company's call to investors, Activision publishing CEO Mike Griffith said CoD5 would be coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and DS, in addition to a return for the franchise to PS2 and Wii for the first time in two years.

That was fast...
so is it just CoD4 in another place?
WWII? Gah.
Two steps forward, one step back.
Huh.
South Pacific will be a nice change of pace, even if it is still WW2.

Not sure whether I'm happy or sad...
This can't be good. The honeymoon for cod4 isn't even over yet and they think we need another COD product. I ll pass on a rushed new coat of paint.
"is set in a WWII Pacific environment"
ugh
this is a good thing. Let Treyarch get there crap out of the gate and then IW will be back in the saddle for #6
There had better be a code to unlock red dot sights, that's all I know.
bah, WWII is sooooo 1945
cash cow
Yay for Treyarch making it about WW2 while ripping off COD4!
Way to innovate!
This is why gamers hate you.
Instead of trying to do something awesome out of nowhere like COD4, we will surely get another WW2 setting with imitation gameplay of COD4 but ultimately feeling like a cheap knockoff.
sounds like a cash-in. wont be as good as COD4, calling it right now!
***Shakes fist in air*** Treyarch!!!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
@Koztah:
I think you mean " one step forward, two steps back"
Sounds like someone wants to be the new EA. >_>
I'm still enjoying Call of Duty 4... it is scary they are already going through another one... >_>

TREYAAARRRRCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHH.
Really tho, just give IW the rights to the game. They really are one of the few people that can do FPS's right.
@lolgumshoe:
Yeah as soon as I read "is set in a WWII Pacific environment" I stopped reading. If they stopped and thought about why CoD4 was so damn popular....ugh
Treyarch.. i'm not surprised one bit. Still, like someone said, let it be out and done with so IW can start on CoD6.
seriously.... why? it makes no sense to go back to a WWII game when CoD4 Doubled the install base of the COD series. I loved CoD2, Skipped CoD3 and play the hell out of CoD4 every night. I think i'll be skiping CoD5 if they go back in time again.
WWII Pacific? So does that mean that this could be mainly naval battles? Could be a good change of pace, going from land to sea and air battles.
I would actually like to see Infinity Ward create a new "universe" instead of another COD game. I love COD4 and I am not completely sick of ww2 if it is done right (Brothers in arms!) but they have so much talent, makes me wonder what they could come up with.
Wow thats alot of platforms its practicly three different games a current gen a last gen and a handheld game.
Nooooooo..
Wow. That is quick. I seriously hope it is good. Treyach I am sure has gotten better but its hard to imagine them matching much less exceeding what Infinity Ward has done.
@tazz77: well yea if i get naval battles i might rent before I buy. never thought of that. Don't F@&k it up Treyarch
*runs to the bathroom and pukes his lungs out*
Don't throw away those CoD4/Halo3/Warhawk copies yet kids!
Good to see I'm not the only one that sees that Activision is about to totally fuck this up. CoD4 is still in heavy rotation and they already announce another...sweet...didn't they learn from the Tony Hawk franchise? Releasing these games annually is not the way to go.
I do think using the CoD4 engine in the new Bond game is a good move since that 3D engine is great. But personally, it's getting to the point where I'm seeing a lot of these upcoming games as "yet another first person shooter"
"sigh"
Wow. So they aren't even trying to update or improve their shitty CoD. They just want to capitalize on the fact that most people won't realize that another company made the last game. Smooth.....
Treyach has never done a quality COD game, so I don't think they're gonna change right after COD 4 came out. The odds are against this one.
Why won't the PS2 just die already? Multiplatform games always have "360 and PS3" and "Wii and PS2" versions despite the Wii being far more capable than the PS2. It got old a long time ago.
Does anyone really expect COD5 to reach the expectations of everyone, even if made by IW?
Another WWII game???? If I remember correctly they said in an interview that they were sick of all the WWII games, so that was out of question for the next CoD
Why not try something like Turning Point but done right?
I'm willing to call bs on this one...
@exkon:
I dunno, infinity ward keeps on getting better and better with each COD game, even though the first was really amazing already.
@Mezodon: PS2 still sells a good number of units each month and it still has the largest userbase by far. It will go down in history as the absolute best selling console at 120+ million.
But...
I expect the Wii version to be gimped again with no online multiplay, no splitscreen play and graphics that won't compare to Metroid Prime 3. Expect it to be the PS2 game ported to Wii.
Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong.
i love how people decide to shit on developers for things outside of their control.
Activision decided that they would give Treyarch ~10 months to make COD3 on 5 platforms. In ~10 months, Treyarch managed to make a game with a really solid metacritic score (83 on 360), including some really good MP ideas.
Yet, for some reason or another, they are to blame for what people consider to be a terrible game.
If you want to shit on COD3, drop your drawers at activisions door, not the developers - they did a solid job in literally 1/5 of the time IW got for COD4.
Can't they just call it Call of Duty: Pacific Warfare or something instead of soiling the regular numbered series with this Treyarch shit?
What's that? No?
Goddammit.
Hey, I was right on the money on my previous bet!
treyarch did a good job with cod 3, it just didn't feel right at all. The multiplayer especially is what pissed me off. I did not like being restricted to certain weapons with certain classes. Thats what mad cod 4 so great is the creat a class feature. Made the game more "me" friendly.
Also its funny how Infinity Ward always refer to COD4 as the 3rd Call of Duty game.
LOL!!! For those who think it's Treyarch's idea to work on a COD title, think again. That's the suit's decision in Activision HQ.
I'm not trying to defend Treyarch but large companies these days are more willing to share technology between projects/IPs.
@pine22: To be exact: CoD4 with not so modern warfare.
Play as Chindits? That'd be kinda cool
"At times, British and Japanese troops were in close combat, bayonets and kukris against katanas."
[en.wikipedia.org]
@Crom:
That's only because they stand on the shoulders of giants. I don't think there's any real skill there as you seem to be implying.
I really don't think this CoD will work well. The Pacific theater, in my mind, doesn't lend itself to this increasing Michael Bay-esque gaming experience that keeps having to best the earlier outing.
How are they going to keep their horrific linearity when you're fighting in jungles? Toss you into a valley and call it a day? Impenetrable bushes? This whole game seems to be a path to failure and we haven't even seen a single piece of solid information from it. Seeing as how the games have had very little innovation since their inception, IW should've been left alone to create a truly great CoD5 that screamed to be bought, not a reskinning of CoD4.
Ride that bitch into the ground!!!
Frankly, when people are willing to snap up anything with CoD stuck on the box, issue 10/10 review scores and opine to its awesomeness without a hint of glaring flaws. Well, is it any surprise when you get franchise f*cked once a year?
@ca$h: If you don't think there's any skill in pushing out a game with tight deadlines, you are sadly mistaken.
Again, not defending Treyarch but they don't deserve the bashing. Again, I blame the suits!
About time they switch theaters. COD3's online was second to none. I still can't get enough of it. WW2 fps will never ever grow old. It will be awesome knocking out japs with USMC issued brass knuckles. I think a Vietnam game with the same kind of quality as past CODs would be awesome.
@jihadjoe343: Seeing as how the games have had very little innovation since their inception, IW should've been left alone to create a truly great CoD5 that screamed to be bought, not a reskinning of CoD4.
IW are being left alone to work on CoD6, hence the leapfrog routine they play giving each team a 18-24mth dev cycle.
All the CoD games are reskins. Little has changed since the first game come out other than them becoming dumber and more generic to smooth out any learning curves, difficulty or balancing issues. Yes I'm looking at you regenerative health.
@ca$h: if you dont think making a 5 SKU game in 10 months requires skill, you are really misinformed.
Argue Treyarch's skill all you want - they have made some bad games for sure, but a developer without skill would not put out an 83 metacritic game.
Why not try a different war? There hasn't been a Vietnam game in a while, and I don't think I've ever seen a Korean war game.
*groan*..
@Mantra_: Um..,development started in late 2006? It would be deeply disconcerting if they game was not playable by now.
@ca$h: Activision promised IW that they were going to do that with CoD3...look how that turned out.
@gibfather: Yeah, there are folks from that team still having nightmares from the crunch Activision imposed on them. Treyarch deserves none of the blame, contrary to the brash consensus of gamers who don't know too much.
Treyarch is a tremendously talented team, but they were given NINE MONTHS to make Call of Duty 3. They have two years for Call of Duty 5.
Hmm, maybe the new engine will make an amazing WWII game... we'll see.
title says all...
quick cash in like rainbowsix2
the next cod is years away...
Will it be as crap as COD3?
Oh, I don't think it's possible to fail that hard twice, but i've been wrong before...
Was the rumor that Infinity Ward regained their rights to the COD name brand true?
Will this really be the last COD game done by a random, crappy studio like Treyarch?
@gibfather:
No, there's skill in pushing out good games under a tight deadline (see Harmonix; Rock Band). I agree with that. What I don't agree with is that Treyarch makes good games. It's not like they even have to make an engine for gods sake, it's handed to them, and they still come out with something utterly generic.
Listen, I'm not dissing their artists, animators, writers (okay, maybe them), I'm just saying they don't have the touch that IW does. The fact IW made CoD4 in two years is far more amazing than Treyarch making Cod3 in one
Hopefully, they start on their games before IW ships theirs anyway, so it's possible CoD5 has had the same amount of development time - something I would bet on considering it's moved into the QA stage. That being said, I'd like more than anything for it to be amazing, but given Treyarch's record, chances are it just won't go down like that.
Treyarch is CoD:UO which is undoubtedly the best version of MP CoD ever.
Perhaps ATVI should have IW build the game and just get Treyarch to finish it off via an expansion pack a year later.
Treyarch also did CoD:UO, which was really quite good. I played the MP for a year.
What is so wrong with it? I think it will be amazing. Maybe eventually Treyarch and IW can do 2 seperate games, but on the same war, and it can have cross-talk, like the SOCOM series.
