Sony’s noise cancellation is still the benchmark the rest of the category gets measured against, and it’s present and accounted for in the XM5 headphones. Sony runs two processors across eight microphones to handle the workload, and the Auto NC Optimizer adjusts the level automatically based on where you are and how the headphones are sitting on your head. That last part matters more than it sounds. Most ANC headphones apply a fixed profile and leave the calibration guesswork to you. The XM5 does it on its own.
Dedicated Chipset
Audio quality comes from the Integrated Processor V1, which Sony designed specifically for this headphone line rather than adapting a chipset from something else. The short version is that this buys you better separation and more consistent reproduction across frequencies, particularly in the midrange where voice and acoustic instruments live. These are not headphones that flatten everything into bass and treble.
The XM5’s battery life runs up to 30 hours between charges, with a quick-charge circuit that delivers three hours of playback from just a three-minute charge. The multipoint connection lets the XM5s stay paired to two devices simultaneously and switch between them without manually disconnecting and re-pairing. Automatic Pausing
Two quality-of-life features that tend to get lost in all of the raves for the ANC and audio quality are Speak-to-Chat and the auto-pause on removal. Speak-to-Chat detects when you start talking and pauses playback automatically, letting ambient sound in so you can have a conversation without pulling the headphones off.
