A powerful MacBook that can handle all your daily work and then some

Apple’s 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro refresh added a 10th-generation Intel Core i5-1038NG7 processor with 6MB of L3 cache and a 3.8GHz Turbo Boost. RAM speeds jumped to 3733MHz LPDDR4X from the older 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory used the year before. This particular configuration comes with the higher-spec four Thunderbolt 3-port layout rather than the two-port base model, along with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD as standard. Apple originally sold this exact configuration for $1,799.

Display specs for the 13-inch panel include a 2560 x 1600 resolution at 500 nits of brightness, a wide P3 color gamut, and Apple’s True Tone technology, which adjusts color for ambient light. The i5 chip and 16GB of RAM manage typical work-from-home tasks such as web browsing, Google Docs, Zoom calls, and email. Light photo editing in Photoshop or coding in Xcode both fit within the machine’s headroom.

The Magic Keyboard replaced the older butterfly keyboard from 2016 to 2019 MacBook Pro models. Scissor switches under each key provide a firmer press with less rattle, and the four arrow keys are laid out in an inverted-T for easier navigation. Above the keyboard, a Touch Bar strip replaces the function keys with app-specific shortcuts that change with the app in focus. A dedicated Touch ID sensor is also positioned in the top-right corner for fingerprint unlocking and Apple Pay authentication.

The chassis has four Thunderbolt 3 ports, two on each side, for both charging and peripherals. Any of the four ports accepts the included USB-C power adapter, so charging works from either side of the laptop. External displays connect via Thunderbolt, supporting one 6K display, one 5K display, or two 4K displays that show independent content on macOS. A single 3.5mm audio jack on the right side also outputs to wired headphones or external speakers.

Apple discontinued the Intel MacBook Pro line in 2022, replacing the 13-inch model with an Apple Silicon M1 chip. Refurbished 2020 units like this one now sell at a fraction of the original launch price, thanks to Apple’s push toward the newer chip. At $395, down from $1,800, the current sale takes 78% off the launch retail. For a home office secondary laptop, a student note-taking laptop, or a backup Mac for the Apple ecosystem, this fits.
