It's summer! All across Japan, there are huge (and impressive) fireworks displays. And yesterday, some of Japan's most popular manga characters got their own.
Above is a fireworks version of Doraemon, the popular robotic cat from the future. For years now, Doraemon fireworks have been launched into the air.
There are also Hello Kitty fireworks.
And Pikachu ones, too.
Hello Kitty and Doraemon fireworks are fairly common at many large displays. However, I don't think I've ever seen Pikachu fireworks here in Japan firsthand.
On Thursday, the people behind the popular manga anthology Shōnen Jump held their own fireworks display and summer festival in Kanagawa Prefecture.
There were several fireworks versions of Jump's popular manga series, including One Piece, Toriko, Dragon Ball, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, Gintama, and Kochikame.
A total of 15,000 fireworks were launched at this display. Obviously, not all of them were comic book fireworks!
Here's an explanation of all the Weekly Jump fireworks:
Toriko follows Toriko, a muscle-bound "Gourmet Hunter".
Here is a Toriko's meat, in fireworks form.
This is the manga version of Koro Sensei from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu.
And now reproduced in fireworks. It looks like the "smiley face" you often can see at fireworks displays. Still, very cool.
In Dragon Ball, there are seven Dragon Balls.
And Dragon Ball fireworks were launched seven times. If you look closely, you can see red fireworks in the middle of the oranges ones. They represent the stars.
For the Kochikame fireworks, things get somewhat abstract.
This is supposed to be Ryotsu's iconic unibrow.
The Gintama fireworks featured Elizabeth.
Wise choice. The result was so cute.
Naruto is incredibly popular, and personally, I liked the Naruto fireworks the least.
I think these are supposed to be a rasenshuriken? Maybe?
And finally, here's One Piece.
Luffy's straw hat looks fantastic in fireworks. Brilliant and beautiful. Love it.
Below you can watch the entire display if you like. The video is in HD, but it's taken from far away, so the experience is quite different from these fireworks being launched directly overhead.
