Netflix has horror movies galore—and is currently on a sci-fi high thanks to Zach Snyder’s Rebel Moon duology. It’s got dystopias covered, too, with Squid Game’s second season coming later this year. But the streamer also has plenty to offer in the way of the fantasy genre, including a current Oscar hopeful.

Ron Perlman is perfectly cast as the beefy, disgruntled, demonic-yet-charismatic Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense investigator who gets wrapped up in a sinister plot to trigger the apocalypse. After the success of his Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson turned to another passion project, remaking the classic monster movie that helped inspire his own filmmaking career. Though it makes the most of modern special effects, it’s set in 1933, so there’s no getting this King Kong—made before Warner Bros. picked up the franchise rights from Universal—confused with the cranky ape currently roaring his way around the Monsterverse. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) directed this adaptation of Soman Chainani’s fairy-tale fantasy, which makes up for a not-that-thrilling narrative with dazzling production design, costumes, and cinematography—plus a cast that only elevates all the eye candy, including Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, and Laurence Fishburne. Nightmare Before Christmas’ Henry Selick and master of horror Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us, Nope) put their delightfully macabre minds together for this stop-motion tale, which also features Peele’s Key & Peele co-creator Keegan-Michael Key. The once and forever comedy partners play mischievous demon brothers who enlist a rebellious teenage girl to help bring them out of the underworld. Watch on Netflix.

This continuation of Masters of the Universe: Revelation just dropped January 25, and though it’s a series, it’s just five 25-ish minute episodes, so if you binge it, you can pretend it’s one (slightly long) animated feature.
