The JBL PartyBox Encore Essential is a portable speaker built around throwing a party. It pushes out 100W of JBL Original Pro Sound from a 5.25-inch woofer and dual tweeters. A built-in light show pulses around the front of the speaker in sync with the music. The Encore Essential is also IPX4 splash-proof, so a stray drink or some pool spray won’t kill the party. A built-in handle and a rechargeable battery rated for 6 hours per charge round out the portable side.

The JBL PartyBox Encore Essential Speaker is currently $180 on Amazon, down from its $330 list price for a 45% discount.

A speaker with plenty of oomph to bring for every occasion

Most portable Bluetooth speakers are limited to 20-30 watts of power, and clarity begins to degrade as soon as you exceed the background music level. However, the Encore Essential produces 100 watts of audio from a single 5.25-inch woofer, paired with dual .75-inch dome tweeters. This allows for solid bass response across genres such as hip hop, EDM, and rock, while the tweeters produce clean highs and maintain vocal presence loudly enough to be heard in a backyard or basement.

The light show is the other half of the appeal. A glowing ring around the woofer cycles through colors that change with the song’s beat. Strobe effects kick in on louder sections. The JBL PartyBox app on your phone lets you customize the light show by color, pattern, and intensity. This works well for setting different moods, like a slower, dimmer light show for a dinner party or a faster strobe-heavy pattern for a dance floor.

Karaoke is one of the more interesting features tucked into the Encore Essential. A wired microphone input on the back lets you plug in a mic and run vocals through the speaker. Bring your own mic, plug it in, and you’ve got a karaoke setup running through the same speaker that’s playing the backing tracks. The JBL PartyBox app also handles karaoke EQ settings for vocal clarity over the music.

Two Encore Essential speakers can be paired through True Wireless Stereo, splitting the sound into a left/right setup for a wider soundstage. Bluetooth is the main connection method for streaming from a phone, but a USB port and an AUX input also work for thumb drives or wired sources. The speaker takes about 3.5 hours to fully charge from a wall outlet, and the battery holds the charge between events without dropping over time.

The JBL PartyBox name carries weight in the portable speaker category, and the Encore Essential is the easiest way to get into the lineup. It’s the model you grab when you want loud sound and a light show without dropping $500 on the bigger PartyBox models. At $180 down from $330, the Encore Essential becomes a one-and-done purchase for backyard hangs, pool parties, or living room karaoke nights.
