The JBL Flip 5 is a portable Bluetooth speaker built for outdoor use, with an IPX7 waterproof rating that lets it survive a drop into a pool or a downpour on a hike. A single charge over USB-C keeps the speaker going for up to 12 hours at moderate volume, enough for a beach day, a bike ride, or a backyard hangout. A racetrack-shaped driver inside delivers 20 watts of amplification. The Flip 5 also comes in 11 different color options.

The JBL FLIP 5 Waterproof Portable Speaker is currently $80 on Amazon, down from its $100 list price for a 20% discount.

A portable speaker that can become your constant audio companion for any media

IPX7 waterproofing means the Flip 5 survives 30 minutes submerged in up to a meter of water. A rugged rubber housing wraps the ends of the speaker, with durable fabric mesh across the middle section for a full grippy surface that resists slipping off a wet ledge or picnic table. Rain, splashes, and pool days won’t hurt the internal components. The whole speaker also weighs 1.2 pounds, light enough to hang from a bike handlebar or a hiking pack strap.

Inside the speaker is a single racetrack-shaped driver, which is essentially a longer oval version of the standard round speaker cone found in most Bluetooth speakers. The racetrack shape gives more surface area for a punchier low end and higher output volume than a round driver of similar size. Total amplification comes to 20 watts, delivered as 2x10W through the internal amp. JBL’s signature sound tuning also favors bass and vocals over strict flat-frequency reproduction, which works well for pop, hip-hop, and rock.

Battery life reaches 12 hours per charge at moderate volume, dropping to about 8 hours at higher volumes. USB-C charging on the bottom of the speaker brings it from empty to full in about 2.5 hours through a standard USB adapter. PartyBoost lets you pair the Flip 5 with any other JBL PartyBoost-compatible speaker for stereo playback or a linked multi-speaker setup for larger spaces. Bluetooth 4.2 is the wireless connection to your phone or laptop, with an effective range of about 30 feet.

Physical dimensions come to 7.1 inches long by 2.7 inches wide by 2.9 inches deep, small enough to slide into a backpack side pocket or a beach bag without taking up much room. The speaker stands vertically or lays horizontally depending on preference, with a passive radiator visible on each end for extended bass response. Color options include Black, Blue, Red, Squad Green, Teal, Purple, Sand, Steel White, Pink, and more, with a total of 11 shades in the current lineup.

JBL’s Flip line has been the compact portable Bluetooth speaker in the JBL catalog for over a decade, iterating on the same basic design at each generation with battery, waterproofing, and sound quality updates. The Flip 5 is in the middle of the lineup by age, released in 2019 as the model between the Flip 4 and the newer Flip 6 and 7. At $80, down from $100, the current sale takes 20% off retail on a proven portable design.
