The Google Fitbit Versa 4 Fitness Smartwatch is Fitbit’s mid-range smartwatch, and its battery life stands out at over six days per charge. That’s roughly six times what most smartwatches manage, and it’s the difference between wearing it to bed every night and taking it off to charge. GPS is built in, so it tracks pace and distance without your phone. The screen is a 1.58-inch AMOLED touchscreen, and the case handles water down to 50 meters. The box includes both a small and a large band.

A reliable fitness tracker you’ll love using daily

Sleep monitoring is exactly what a six-day battery really enables, since a smartwatch charged every night doesn’t see you sleeping. The Versa 4 provides a detailed breakdown of how long you’re spending in each sleep stage and produces a daily Sleep Score by the time you wake up. It also integrates that information into a Smart Wake alarm system designed to find a light sleep phase near your desired wake-up time, so it doesn’t wake you out of deep sleep. Fast charging gives you coverage if it ever runs low, since 12 minutes on the charger equals a full day of use.

Built-in GPS sets this apart from a fitness band, since most bands borrow their GPS signal from the owner’s smartphone and need the phone in a pocket while mapping. This unit has both GPS and GLONASS capability, so you can leave your phone behind during a run and still get accurate route, pace, and distance after syncing.

In addition to over 40 exercise modes, including running, biking, swimming, yoga, and strength training, the Versa 4 will automatically begin tracking your activities once it detects you’ve started one of those activities, instead of requiring you to press a start button. Active Zone Minutes measures the time spent in an elevated heart rate zone, which is generally a more effective way to determine whether a workout was beneficial than simply measuring the number of steps taken.

Health monitoring occurs continuously throughout the day using the optical heart rate sensor on the back of the Versa 4, and it monitors resting heart rate, heart rate variability, SpO2 levels, breathing rate, and changes in skin temperature. It also provides irregular heartbeat alerts, though like many of Fitbit’s other watches, the Versa 4 doesn’t include an on-demand electrocardiogram feature like the one available in the Charge 6 and Sense 2 models currently offered.

Alexa is integrated into the device for voice command capabilities. Google Maps provides turn-by-turn navigation. Google Wallet enables contactless payments via NFC. ,Currently, the Google Fitbit Versa 4 Fitness Smartwatch costs $160 instead of its original price of $200. Note that access to your Daily Readiness Score and Sleep Profile requires a Fitbit Premium subscription, which you can try with a free trial before committing.
