If you’ve been on the outside of the Apple Watch ecosystem looking in, waiting for the velvet-rope pricing to drop just a little more, that time is now. The Apple Watch SE 3, Apple’s entry-level watch that doesn’t feel or act like it’s entry-level, is just $219 right now at Amazon in its 40mm form.
The SE 3 sits below the Series 11 in Apple’s lineup, which means it skips ECG, blood oxygen, and the crash detection features the higher model carries. But in a first for the SE line, it does not skip the Always-On Display – the SE 2 required a wrist raise to wake the face. That seemingly small change alone makes the SE 3 meaningfully easier to use at a glance, and it closes a gap that made the previous version feel like a deliberate compromise. Irregular heart rhythm alerts and high/low heart rate notifications are still here, handled by the optical sensor rather than the electrical one in the Series 11.
Ready to Sweat
On the fitness side, the SE 3 tracks the full spread of Apple Watch workout types: running, cycling, swimming, strength training, and the rest. Workout Buddy, the coaching feature powered by Apple Intelligence, requires a nearby iPhone. Sleep tracking and the Vitals app for overnight metrics are present, and the sleep apnea notification feature is available on both size configurations of the SE 3. The wrist temperature sensor handles cycle tracking and ovulation estimates for anyone using that feature.
Another key improvement over the SE 2 is charging speed: The SE 3 charges twice as fast, and just 15 minutes on the cable gets you about 8 hours of battery. That gives the SE 3 a huge boost for the before-bed crowd who want to squeeze in sleep tracking without babysitting a charge level.
Bring Your Phone
The SE 3 connects over GPS for location tracking and syncs workouts, apps, and notifications through your iPhone or a Wi-Fi network. That’s the one trade-off that separates the GPS configuration from the cellular models, which run $70 to $80 more. For most people who keep their phone nearby, the GPS-only model is still a very practical choice. The 40mm case suits smaller wrists; buyers who want more screen real estate should look at the 44mm, which carries a slightly different price.
The Apple Watch SE 3 undercuts every cellular Apple Watch by a substantial price margin, especially now that Amazon’s dropped its price to just $219. Compare that number to the Series 11, which starts at $399. The SE 3 does not do everything the Series 11 does, but it covers the health and fitness cases that drive most Apple Watch purchases. The current $219 price at Amazon is the gates of the Apple Watch universe swinging open for new residents.
