On the fitness side, the SE 3 tracks the full spread of Apple Watch workout types: running, cycling, swimming, strength training, and the rest. Workout Buddy, the coaching feature powered by Apple Intelligence, requires a nearby iPhone. Sleep tracking and the Vitals app for overnight metrics are present, and the sleep apnea notification feature is available on both size configurations of the SE 3. The wrist temperature sensor handles cycle tracking and ovulation estimates for anyone using that feature.
Another key improvement over the SE 2 is charging speed: The SE 3 charges twice as fast, and just 15 minutes on the cable gets you about 8 hours of battery. That gives the SE 3 a huge boost for the before-bed crowd who want to squeeze in sleep tracking without babysitting a charge level.
Bring Your Phone
The SE 3 connects over GPS for location tracking and syncs workouts, apps, and notifications through your iPhone or a Wi-Fi network. That’s the one trade-off that separates the GPS configuration from the cellular models, which run $70 to $80 more. For most people who keep their phone nearby, the GPS-only model is still a very practical choice. The 40mm case suits smaller wrists; buyers who want more screen real estate should look at the 44mm, which carries a slightly different price.
The Apple Watch SE 3 undercuts every cellular Apple Watch by a substantial price margin, especially now that Amazon’s dropped its price to just $219. Compare that number to the Series 11, which starts at $399. The SE 3 does not do everything the Series 11 does, but it covers the health and fitness cases that drive most Apple Watch purchases.
