The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 4-Pack is a set of four Bluetooth tracker tiles designed to attach to items you frequently misplace and locate through Samsung’s SmartThings Find network. Two black and two white tags come in the box, each about the size of a quarter with a keyring loop on one end. Ultra-Wideband inside the tags enables inch-level precision tracking on compatible Galaxy phones.
Bluetooth smart trackers to help you find all your lost items
Attaching a SmartTag2 to your keys, wallet, backpack, or luggage tag allows you to find an item via the SmartThings Find app on your Samsung mobile device if it is lost. The tags will begin transmitting a low-energy Bluetooth signal once they are connected to a mobile device. Each time a Samsung phone passes near one of these tags, it will anonymously report the tag’s last-known location to Samsung’s servers. If you leave your keys in a coffee shop, the next Samsung phone that walks past updates the tag’s location in your app without the person carrying that phone knowing anything happened.
Bluetooth reaches about 120 meters between the SmartTag2 and your own phone under open conditions, which is more than enough range for finding something in a house or a small yard. Getting closer than that is where the Ultra-Wideband chip inside the tag takes over. The SmartThings Find app switches to Compass View at close range and shows a directional arrow that points to the SmartTag2 like a metal detector, accurate to within inches. An augmented reality view also overlays the tag location on your camera view.
The CR2032 coin cell battery inside each tag lasts up to 500 days on normal operation before the tag needs a replacement battery. Turning on Power Saving Mode in the app slows the tag’s Bluetooth broadcasts to conserve battery, extending the life of the tag to about 700 days at the cost of less frequent location updates. IP67 water and dust resistance also lets the SmartTag2 survive a rainstorm, a dropped set of keys in a puddle, or a load of laundry when it accidentally gets thrown in with the clothes.
Double-pressing the button on a SmartTag2 also triggers preset SmartThings routines, effectively turning the tag into a physical button for smart home commands. For example, pressing a tag by the front door can turn on the porch light and lock the door on your way out. Samsung’s anti-stalking system also alerts your phone if an unknown SmartTag2 has been traveling with you for an extended period.
Losing your keys at a coffee shop, at the office, or somewhere in your own house is the moment a $13 tracker pays for itself. Samsung’s 4-pack drops the SmartTag2 to that price per tag at the current sale, down from $30 each at retail. Tracking runs through the SmartThings Find app on Samsung Galaxy phones only, so an iPhone or a Google Pixel in the mix won’t work with these.
