Apple’s AirPods are perhaps the most recognizable earbuds on the market. We’re four generations deep and that fact hasn’t changed. Having come out almost two years ago, this latest generation of wireless earbuds build on top of what’s been working for Apple while also ironing out some of the issues present on previous models. Right now, the Apple AirPods 4 have been discounted by 23%. Usually, you can find the pair for $129, but the limited-time deal knocks off $30—bringing what you pay down to just $99.

For listeners who demand more advanced features like active noise cancelation, the version supporting ANC has also dropped in price. This pair can normally be found for $179, but after a 17% discount of $30, these AirPods are now sitting at only $149.

Improved Sound and Vocal Clarity

At first glance, these fourth-generation Apple earbuds look no different from their predecessor. Upon further inspection when directly comparing them side by side, you’ll notice the contour of the earbuds have been refined and the stem shortened. They’re sleeker, and are designed to fit more comfortably and securely in one’s ears. This is achieved by the updated shape which has its weight more evenly distributed. The stem still includes quick-press controls which let the wearers play, pause, or skip track with simple taps along the side.

On the inside, Apple has updated the chipset with the H2 chip, enables both stronger call performance and audio quality. When making a phone call or engaging in a video chat, the new H2 chip powers an advanced voice isolation which can reduce the sounds of any unwanted sounds from your surroundings. This ensures that you sound crystal clear coming through on the other end to folks on the call with you. As far as listening on your side goes, the H2 chip also works at enhancing the sound quality through its new acoustic architecture. You’ll notice that the high frequencies are able to be heard with more clarity, while also producing a punchier bass than with the previous generation.

Apple has also introduced a new method of engaging with Siri. On top of the usual voice commands, Apple AirPods 4 users can now respond to prompts silently via head gestures. You can shake your head no, or nod your head yes. It’s subtle, but you might find it less embarrassing to be on the subway nodding your head at no-one in particular rather than shouting, “No!” to no one in particular.

Perhaps the most notable change is found on the charging case. After years of shipping every unit with the proprietary Lightning connector, Apple has finally moved toward the now standard USB-C.
