Wireless headphones usually turn into dead weight the moment the battery runs out. Bose’s QuietComfort model keeps playing through a cable in that situation, one of several practical choices on a pair that is far cheaper than usual right now, since the Bose QC headphones fall from $359 to $169 on Amazon (-53%). No Prime membership is needed, and most of the color range is included.

Quiet Mode, Aware Mode and a Cable for Emergencies

Noise cancellation is what the QuietComfort name has stood for and here it combines active processing with the passive isolation of closed, over-ear cups. Two modes are available. Quiet applies full cancellation, for a flight, a train or an open-plan office where three conversations overlap. Aware does the opposite and lets the surroundings through, so you can hear a boarding announcement or a colleague asking a question without lifting an ear cup. Switching between them is the only decision to make, which I count as a strength for people who never open a settings app.

Comfort has always been the other reason to buy Bose. The ear cushions are thick and soft, the headband is padded, and the whole thing is designed for sessions that last hours. That matters for long-haul travel, and just as much for an evening of gaming or a full workday on calls, when a tighter or heavier pair starts to press on the top of the head.

On sound, Bose provides an adjustable EQ in its app, with separate control over bass, mid-range and treble, so listeners who find the default tuning too polite can push the low end. Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours per charge. When it does run low, 15 minutes on a USB-C cable restores up to two and a half hours, about the length of a film. In practice, 24 hours means charging once or twice a week for a commuter, and a transatlantic round trip without packing a charger in the cabin bag.

Then there is the cable mentioned at the start. Bose includes an audio cord with an in-line microphone, and plugging it in lets the headphones work without Bluetooth, including when the battery is flat. It also makes them usable with anything that has a headphone jack, such as an in-flight screen or, in principle, a console controller, where the in-line microphone can stand in for a headset. Multipoint Bluetooth keeps more than one device connected, so a laptop and a phone can share the headphones without re-pairing. Software updates and new features arrive through the same Bose app. What the listing does not describe is any fine adjustment of the cancelling level beyond the two modes. Amazon reviewers rate them 4.5 out of 5 across more than 22,000 ratings.

Six finishes carry the full reduction: the Bose QuietComfort headphones cost $169 on Amazon against a list price of $359 in Black, Cypress Green, Ice Blue, Moonlight Grey, Petal Pink and White Smoke. Sandstone and Twilight Blue are $169 too, with lower list prices, while Chilled Lilac stays at $339.99. Returns are free and no Prime membership is required.
