Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of my favorites. Once you get past the godawful horrific pop-in textures in some areas, it’s surprising how much fun you can have cruising around in your mech exploring off the beaten path, jumping off those gorgeous waterfalls in Noctilum, driving motorbike style across the fuck-off Read more

Batman: Arkham Knight. An early segment that takes place in Ace Chemicals. Batman has to put some chemical cylinders into their compartments to reduce the blast radius of Scarecrow’s chemical bomb, sacrificing himself in the process. Alfred tries to convince him to escape. Behind all of this, a solo piano version of Read more

Great article idea, ok here are mine in no particular order :D Read more

I just wish there had been one more season. Mostly because I loved the show so much but also because there are three months of summer vacation and three journals the symmetry could have been perfect. Read more

I’m currently playing Odin Sphere Leifthrasir and I really enjoy the poetic and tragic universe. I particulary like the music from the world map, which is a vocal version of the main theme. It is really sad and makes me nostalgic wich is a feeling I like when playing !

Saints Row 2. It’s simply the best. SR3 and 4 may have amped up the wildness of the series, but as far as pure content goes, SR2 has them both beat. So much freedom to do whatever you wanted, absolute co-op perfection, a million ways to customize your characters and cars, and a surprisingly involving story. Wonderful Read more

Well it’s a short list, because so many of them follow the imo bad Rockstar or Ubisoft open-world philosophy. Read more

I’m going to wind back the clock a little bit and say any of the Gothic-style games by Piranha Bytes Games (Gothic 1, 2, and the Risen games). Going back a little further, but definitely in the same vein, Ultima Ascension. Come to think of it, are the original Ultima games considered open world? Sure, they weren’t 3D, Read more

Mine would either have to be Fallout NV or, if we’re counting procedurally generated survival games, Rust. Rust wasn’t looking it’s best last time I poked my head in, but I’ve seen some beautiful days on Naked Murder Island. Read more

I’ve never beat the game, not even close, but it’s the only open-world game I’ve played for more than an hour (including Oblivion and Fallout 3). Nostalgia is one heck of a drug.

Mine was InFamous. Say what you want about the story but the urban, city environment was right up my alley (pun intended). Coming from someone born and raised in the concrete jungles of Toronto this game made me see my as city more alive and more interesting as it has ever been. Read more

So far, my favorite open world game is a toss up between Minecraft due to literally just allowing for so many styles of play and still being updated with new ways to play (even though I haven’t played seriously in about a year), Skyrim, I don’t even have a real good reason on this one; I just really like the game. I’m Read more

Most played: Minecraft. My hours are up in the 1000s atleast (possibly past 5000). If there was a way to track just how much I played, across multiple computers and installs, I might even share that shame. Read more

Elder Scrolls games usually do the trick in immersing me. One of the few sets of games where it can feel like I’m actually exploring a dungeon. Just get some good headphones and get sucked right in. Morowind, Oblivion, Skyrim. Heavily moded Skyrim still looks better than a lot of new games out now. Read more

Ocarina of Time. Which actually makes me think a bit about how some of its design can be applied to more modern entries in the genre. Ocarina of Time’s world felt alive, and meaningful, it made you engage with it. That’s something that I think we could use more of. Read more

I’ve played a couple of open-world games, but the ones that really stand out to memory were Grand Theft Auto 3 (my first open-world game with 3d graphics that permitted me to do anything), and Freelancer (space exploration, combat, even piracy, and trading).
