Monopoly on the NES was the best. But I always hated that their wasn't any sort of house rules option to turn off land auctions. Although it was a great way to get property on the cheap. As far as the actual game goes, the Speed Die is the best thing to ever happen to it.

No Risk? It was the only one on my list. Ultimately if you get a really expensive fancy carved chess set, its always going to be cooler than a video game version (though cut-scenes for taking pieces is cool.) Risk is actually more fun when you aren't dicking around counting pieces and cards every turn. Read more

I love Clue for SNES. I love everything about it, but what I love most is that it creeped me out. Seriously. I always get a scary vibe from it, and nobody seems to agree with me! The music and those faces are what do it for me. Read more

Monopoly on the NES was a staple of my childhood, pretty sure it's how I learned the game to begin with. That music has stuck with me too. That music IS the monopoly music, and playing any other digital monopoly just feels wrong because it doesn't have those classic tunes. Read more

This stupid thing. The first time I played the level, I spotted the alarm ahead of time, traced its power cable to the junction box, and attempted to turn it off to no avail. Nothing happened. Confused, I simply walked forward, towards what was obviously an alarm system I shouldn't be walking into, and triggered a

I'm one of those that hated that level so much I gave up when I got stuck on the courtyard section. I didn't play the game for the longest time until Uncharted 2 got brought up on Kotaku about this issue I think. One of the readers convinced me to suck it through and promised the rest of the game was good. Sure enough Read more

My experience with Uncharted games is that they try to be too many things and fail. They are Platformers, shooters, (not really) puzzle games, AND run and gun survival games. The ones I played weren't that cohesive except for the one on the PS Vita. I felt that was limited but focused. Read more

This is a random article... But I mostly agree. It was a somewhat boring level with bad stealth elements. But on the other hand, it had the following exchange, so it's okay in my book : Read more

As much as I agree with your critique of the level's game play and its relevance to the rest of the game's chief mechanics, I have to say that this level is the very definition of a necessary evil. The events transpired in it are necessary for the story, and the developers could have given us either a long and Read more

Yeah, there was a lot of whining and moaning about it when the game came out, too, and I never got it. The game deliberately starts on a different pace to a) introduce the stealth and melee mechanics that were new to the series and b) narratively establish the kind of people these new allies are and not jump straight Read more

Great article; I am in complete agreement.

I do, however, think that you left out one crucial detail that factors into Super Metroid's longevity: its graphics.

Hand-drawn, 16-bit (or higher) pixel art absolutely holds up as a beautiful visual style, even today. What was once done as a necessity due to technical Read more

Super Metroid is still one of my favorite games ever. The only Metroidvania type game that's come anywhere close to being that epic in my opinion is Castlevania: SoTN. I still remember playing Super Metroid for the first time. Somewhere in the middle of my play-through, watching the demos and seeing Samus heal herself Read more

This was such a great time in gaming history. With the power of the SNES it was possible for developers to more accurately realize their visions for their series that weren't possible before. The things some devs managed to get out of such rudimentary 16 bit hardware still boggles the mind. Yes the stories aren't as Read more

Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle with Super Metroid. Everything just aligned correctly. I read an article in Retro Gamer that they spent forever working on it, it blew up Nintendo's budget, and it just came together perfectly. Read more

Super Metroid is a masterpiece. Read more

Agreed 100%. Great write up. Experiencing this for the first time as a kid who grew up with Atari, Colecovision, NES etc. I was totally blown away. Read more
