Actually, reading over this again and taking a little liberty reading between the lines, it seems, Stephen, that you're actually pondering the maturity of video games as a whole. Mario is just the condensed epitome of it all. "Relevant fiction" in the penultimate paragraph stood out to me. Read more

My feelings for this are succinct and clear for once. I don't feel like Mario is juvenile. Games like MadWorld are juvenile. I feel far more embarrassed playing something like Bayonetta or even Tekken 6 (the ridiculous campaign mode, anyway) than I do a Mario game. Read more

@Comban will Ban you.: So far it's only been Activision (MW2) and 2K Games (Borderlands/Bioshock 2). All the other games, including the recently released Mass Effect 2, are at their American prices. It pisses me off because it shows that they are blatantly charging more because they can. You can't claim shipping costs Read more

@meatpopsicle: Incidentally, the Ludomancy stuff (which is art) proves a point what I was saying before: video games are a genre, not a medium. In this case, I would argue that no, these are not games. The artist here might claim they are, but, you know, intentional fallacy. Read more

I don't think this is boycott-worthy. What is boycott-worthy is the fact that 2K Games has decided to price the Steam version of the game at extortionate levels in Australia. Read more

@meatpopsicle: Why am I so sure? Because I know I'm right. And I can look at this objectively because I'm not the one on the back foot trying to defend what I do for a living as enriching the human race. Read more

@CerebralMagpie: We're not living in grass huts, true, but if you've been overseas to any developed country you'll see just how backwards and behind the times we actually are. We're held back by distance, a small population, and the fact when someone tries to point out that we're actually a little bit shit everyone Read more

@meatpopsicle: I'm a computer science major AND an English major. I've made games and I've reviewed them (independently of each other, of course). My thesis was on video game narrative. I think I have the credentials. Read more

@Michael Dukakis: Tim Tams are a biscuit. An Australian biscuit — but one that is also an icon in New Zealand. (Kiwi kids are Weetbix... I mean Aussie kids are Weetbix... I mean... shit.) Read more

I thought this was going to be a post by Luke. Now I'm confused. :( Read more

@dirty: Exactly. It's profit by apathy. You go, "Meh, it's 20c (or whatever)." But Superman III logic shows us that over tens of thousands of transactions that's a good amount of profit. Read more

@MajellaCabatan: I dunno, I find gift cards MORE thoughtful than cash. Gift cards say to me "Here, I know you like this. Go treat yourself." Cash says to me "Enjoy the hookers and blow." Read more

@dirty: But that's the thing: what happens if that's the only thing you're ever going to buy? Read more

@Orihalcon: Uh, I didn't work out shit. It tells me what it's charging in me in NZ$ when I go to buy the points. Read more

You know what, thinking on this, shouldn't fucking every store that does gift cards get sued for this? My sister got me a NZ$30 iTunes gift card for my birthday. I remember that I bought an album for $17.99 and was left with $12.01 left on my account. That couldn't get me another album (maybe an EP, but they're not Read more

@GorbyGipper: Even if you're math-wizz enough to work it out, it's also missing the point. Read more
