whenever i write about or stream a racing game, i get a lot of “how do i get into racing games” questions; so many that i keep thinking i should do a “how to get into racing games” video. one of my Top Ten Tips would be to crank that sound and always be listening to the cars. playing with the sound turned off should =… Read more
events are all grouped into classes, so there’s a little playlist of cars you’re allowed to use for each one. you can buy a new car if you need one for a particular race. and sometimes you are forced to drive a specific vehicle. for example, for the third event in the stock car series, you have to buy a trophy truck;… Read more
i 1000% forgive you for not wading into my hideous video to find the answer, so here it is: yes! the damage is great. persistent debris on the track, as well. the AIs are rowdier than heck, too, and cause big accidents decently frequently, so yeah, i’ve lost a race because i got slammed by the hood flyin off another… Read more
Nah, it’s pretty bare. Though one guy’s “no frills” is another guy’s “no nonsense,” I guess. The racing is extremely solid, for what it’s worth. Read more
Yeah, it’s *so weird* that “singleplayer arcade-style late-night zone-out racing games” fell off the map. We haven’t had a Ridge Racer in forever, and stuff like Forza Horizon—while wonderful!—is too packed with open-world features, worldbuilding, and other triple-A-video-game paraphernalia. I just wanna drive some… Read more

Hmmm, I think it’s a pretty strong assumption, though, given that all the games it stylistically references (Final Fantasy VI, for example) were 60fps. I was there, buddy . . . I was there in 1994, when literally everything was 60fps, which was interestingly before we even knew what “60fps” was. Read more

I promise I am not including any in-jokes re: my videos or any of my other writing. I am translating the game exactly as it would have been translated by, uh, someone like me, had I been 40 years old in 1997 instead of in 2019! Read more

yeah, a lot rankles me about the word “metroidvania.” “metroidvania” is what internet forum-dwelling game experts in the early 2000s called castlevania symphony of the night, specifically. ie, that it was a castlevania that felt like super metroid. Read more
heh . . . i feel like The Other Term is (*borderline*) acceptable only for describing a 2D side-scroller. i simply won’t stand for its use in a 3D game! i actually think we should coin the term “primelike,” to describe a game that, like this one, is like metroid prime specifically. Read more
