I make videos for Kotaku. I make video games for myself and my friends. I like writing fiction. Someday I will publish a novel. Who knows!

The stories are great. They’re very laid back, subtle, and . . . sweet. There’s always a really strong gimmick to the plot structure. People love Chrono Trigger because it had time travel, though, well, first of all, Yuji Horii, who wrote Chrono Trigger, is the director / writer / designer of all Dragon Quests. And Read more

The Super Famicom port is so, so beautiful. It was released in 1996, after both Dragon Quest VI and Chrono Trigger, so it is definitely the apex of Super Nintendo Pixel Art. Read more

You have to choose a style at a certain point, and then — THEN — you can change it whenever you want, though only at a church. I love that they only let you change it at a church. Read more

It is way, way laid back from a Final Fantasy, so if you’re in the mood for that, you’ll love it. Dragon Quests are, by and large, most similar to the early FFs. The later DQs are more similar to FFIV / FFVI / FFIX in style, structure, and pacing. Which is great because those games own. Yep~~~ Read more

Oh yeah they were just like “it’s going to be for Nintendo’s next console, whatever that is” Read more

If you can get DQV for the DS, that’s The Best One! And the recent 3DS remake of DQVII is wonderful. Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS sadly doesn’t look as impressive as the PS2 version did way back when, so if you want a Big Wow Bonkers Graphics DQ, just wait for DQXI in English, I’d say. Read more

I just tweeted about the 3DS ports—it looks like they’re the mobile ports, stretched to fit the screen. The pixels look pretty grody :-( Read more

Well, the Switch version is definitely happening. They announced it, way back when the Switch was still the “NX”. My *Educated Guess* is that it’s taking longer because they’re going to cram all the graphical styles in there. I mean . . . it has to be. It just has to be. Read more

The question is . . . which Graphical Style is the Switch version going to have? They’ve got 3DS Chibi 3D, 3DS 16-bit pixel art, and PS4 HD 3D . . . oh god . . . please . . . I hope the Switch version has all three . . . and special 8-bit pixel art. I will scream. I just want all of those. I might die if it has all of Read more

i still haven’t taken the darn thing out of the box — i intend to do so live, for a stream of dragon quest xi. though now i realize the controller’s battery might not be charged . . . so i’ll plug it into my pc tonight and come back to this comment!! Read more

people keep asking me if the slime bubble on the back ruins the ergonomics, and i’m like, well, no . . . because it’s on the top screen! you don’t ever hold the thing by the top screen :-O Read more

you . . . uh . . . i’d tell you how much the special edition PS4 cost me, though maybe you’d better google it instead Read more

Ah, yeah, it totally feels like a “Oh, hey, yeah, I’m—” [name entry screen] dialogue. Except I guess he has a proper name there on his dialogue box, not something like “Guy”. Read more
