The foldable iPhone Duo might have stolen most of the headlines from this week’s Apple event, but fitness-minded buyers are more excited about the new Apple Watch Series 12 and its upgraded health tracking features. More exciting still: The pre-order window for the Apple Watch Series 12 is now officially open at Amazon, with a $399 opening price for the 42mm GPS model.

Among the many health-related upgrades Apple’s added to the Series 12 is HRV measurement that runs as often as every five minutes, up from the once-nightly readings the Series 11 provided. Heart rate variability is one of the more meaningful signals in personal health monitoring. It reflects your autonomic nervous system’s state in a way that resting heart rate alone doesn’t. Getting readings that frequent gives the Vitals app and the new Readiness feature actual intraday data to work with rather than a single overnight snapshot. The Series 12 also bumps background heart rate readings to every five seconds.

Second Opinion

The Readiness feature is new with the Series 12, and it’s worth understanding what it actually does before deciding how much weight to put on it. It synthesizes your recent activity data, overnight vitals, and sleep metrics into a daily assessment of whether your body is prepared for effort or needs more recovery time. That’s a more integrated picture than the sleep score alone, and it positions the Series 12 alongside Garmin’s Body Battery feature, which has been a selling point for that brand’s fitness-focused audience for several years. Apple’s implementation ties directly into Workout Buddy, which is powered by Apple Intelligence and requires a nearby iPhone to operate.

The rest of the health suite carries over from the Series 11: blood oxygen monitoring, menstrual cycle tracking, ECG capability, the FDA-cleared hypertension detection that Series 11 introduced, and fall and crash detection that can contact emergency services automatically. The sleep score and the Vitals overnight summary remain in place. On the safety side, nothing has changed, which is appropriate since those features were already the strongest argument for the platform.

All-Day Battery

The Series 12’s battery life holds at 24 hours for normal use, and the fast-charge behavior carries over from the Series 11 as well: 15 minutes on the charger returns up to 12 hours of use. That’s not in the same conversation as a Garmin Fenix, but it’s consistent with how Apple has positioned the series and how most users actually interact with a daily-wear smartwatch. The 42mm aluminum case with Sport Band configuration and GPS is the baseline option at $399.

The Series 11 still holds its own in the Apple Watch lineup, but if you’re on a Series 10 or older, the HRV improvement and the Readiness feature are worth the upgrade. The preorder for the Apple Watch Series 12 at Amazon is open now for anyone who wants it as soon as it ships on Sept. 18.
