Phones are bad places to read a novel, mostly because everything else on them wants your attention more than chapter three does. That is the case for a dedicated e-reader and Amazon has cut the price of its better-equipped one: the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (2024, 32GB) falls from $249.99 to $169.99 on Amazon, 32% off. The offer is a limited time deal, open to every customer with or without Prime, and it applies to all three metallic colors.

Wireless Charging and a Light That Adjusts Itself

Three things separate the Signature Edition from the regular Paperwhite: a front light that adjusts on its own, wireless charging and 32GB of storage. The light is the one I’d miss most after getting used to it. Reading on a sofa as the afternoon turns to evening normally means stopping twice to nudge a brightness slider, and here a sensor does it for you, from full sun on a terrace to a dark bedroom. Wireless charging is more of a comfort, and it needs a dock that Amazon sells separately. As for 32GB, it is far more than a library of novels will ever fill.

The screen measures 7 inches, with a higher contrast ratio than the generation before and page turns that Amazon says are 25% faster. Those sound like small gains, but page turns are the one action repeated hundreds of times per book, and any lag there is felt. The display is glare-free, so text stays legible outdoors where a phone or tablet washes out, and the body is thin enough to hold in one hand on a crowded train. Compared with a paperback, the practical gain is the suitcase: one device replaces the four books you would otherwise pack and the fifth you would buy at the airport.

Battery life is counted in weeks: up to 12 on one charge through USB-C, according to Amazon. In practice the charger can stay home for a two-week holiday, which is not something to say about many devices. The Kindle is also waterproof, and Amazon mentions the pool and the bath as fair territory. Sand, sunscreen and a splash from the kids are the realistic threats, and it is built for those.

What the Kindle leaves out matters as much: There is no social media, no notifications and no other apps, only books, drawn from a Kindle Store that Amazon puts at more than 15 million titles. Kindle Unlimited is optional and the version discussed here comes without it. Readers who would like to try the service can choose the other option on the page, which adds three months of Kindle Unlimited.

Whichever color you pick, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition costs $169.99 on Amazon against a list price of $249.99, in Metallic Black, Metallic Jade or Metallic Raspberry, without Kindle Unlimited. The standard Kindle Paperwhite is shown on the same page from $199.99. Returns are free, and Amazon lists a trade-in option for an older device.
