The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X is perfect for you if you’re putting together a new high-performance PC for serious creative work, gaming, or both. It’s not quite as robust as the flagship 9950X, but it’s a great upgrade over Zen 4 processors. With the 9900X, you’ll have enough power to handle video editing, 3D rendering, and modern game titles without the system slowing down during a heavy workload. It also uses less power than the Zen 4 line, which makes the 9900X easier to cool quietly.

You can buy the Ryzen 9 9900X for $343 on Amazon, which is $156 or 31% below the regular price of $499.

A powerful processor perfect for upgrading your gaming PC and beyond

Zen 5 delivers meaningful improvements over Zen 4. Due to its 12-core, 24-thread architecture, the 9900X is particularly suited to mixed-workload environments. Average single-threaded performance improves by around 16%, while multi-threaded workloads improve similarly based on the number of threads that an application can scale to. So, creators will experience tangible reductions in like rendering Blender scenes, exporting video files using DaVinci Resolve, and compiling large codebases in Visual Studio.

Performance in gaming is also top-notch. Many modern AAA titles utilize no more than four to eight processor cores, and the 9900X enjoys significant performance advantages due to its faster clock speeds and significantly larger cache at both 1080p and 1440p resolution. Plus, the chip can hand off background tasks to cores that aren’t currently in use without slowing down your games, keeping performance consistent. While the GPU becomes the limiting factor in most 4K build configurations, the 9900X provides sufficient headroom for even the fastest graphics cards available today without creating a bottleneck.

The 9900X operates at a maximum TDP of 120W, lower than many 12-core Zen 4 processors in the prior generation, which peaked at 162W under all-core boost conditions. Lower TDP operating conditions make cooling the chip via air-cooling much simpler, and most users have reported comfortable operation of this processor with a good-quality 240mm AIO liquid-cooler or a high-end air-cooled solution.

AM5 will remain the active AMD desktop socket through at least 2027. So, picking up a 9900X leaves room for a future CPU upgrade without having to replace the motherboard. Memory support officially tops out at DDR5-5600. However, most boards support higher overclocked RAM speeds through EXPO profiles.

The Ryzen 9 9900X is usually sold at $499. However, the current deal on Amazon brings the price down to $343. The $156 reduction makes the 9900X a more accessible entry point into a current-generation AM5 build, particularly if you’re putting together a new system from scratch rather than upgrading an existing Ryzen rig.
