The last thing most people touch at night and the first thing they touch in the morning is a phone, largely because it doubles as the alarm clock. Putting a real clock back on the nightstand is the simplest way to break that habit, and Amazon’s version is cheaper than usual, as the Echo Spot goes from $109.99 to $54.99 on Amazon, exactly 50% off. All three colors are included, and the price does not depend on a Prime membership.

Alarm Clock First, Smart Speaker Second

What you see on the Echo Spot is deliberately limited: the time, the weather, the title of the song that is playing, and controls for smart home devices. The clock face and its colors can be changed to suit the room, and the screen responds to touch, so dimming a lamp or skipping a track doesn’t require speaking out loud next to someone who is asleep. I count the restraint as a point in its favor. This is a display that tells you it is 6:40 and raining, without a feed to scroll through, and Amazon’s listing makes no mention of a camera.

Waking up is where it differs most from a phone alarm. Through an Alexa routine, the Spot can start the morning with music and a gradual increase in light in place of a sudden buzzer, then answer the questions that normally send you to a screen: the forecast and the day’s reminders. For winter mornings when it is still dark at seven, that gentler start is easy to appreciate.

As a speaker, Amazon describes clear vocals and deep bass. I’d keep expectations in line with the size of the thing: it is well suited to podcasts, audiobooks and the radio while getting dressed, and nobody should plan a party around it. The smart home functions go further than voice commands, since the Spot can detect motion and use it in routines, turning down a thermostat when you leave the room or opening connected blinds when you walk in. Amazon suggests offices and kitchens as other homes for it, and a desk is a good one: a clock, a timer and a way to switch the lights without reaching for the phone that was supposed to stay face down.

Two other points are worth knowing. With eero built in, the Echo Spot can extend Wi-Fi coverage by up to 1,000 square feet, but only for homes that already run an eero network. Amazon also presents this model as designed for Alexa+, its more conversational assistant. On privacy, there is a physical button to switch the microphone off, plus controls in the app, and the device is made from 36% recycled materials.

Sold as the device only, the Echo Spot costs $54.99 on Amazon against a list price of $109.99, in Black, Glacier White or Ocean Blue, with no Prime condition. Bundles appear on the same page for those who want more, including one with a smart plug at $69.98 and one with an Echo Dot at $94.98. Returns are free, and Amazon lists a trade-in option for anyone replacing an older Echo.
