Precision Finding is the feature Apple improved most this time. Once you’re within range, your iPhone puts an arrow on screen pointing at the AirTag along with the distance in feet, and the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip extends how far away that works from roughly 50 feet to around 200. Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 or newer can now do Precision Finding on their own, without pulling out your phone at all.
The new speaker is noticeably louder than the one in the old AirTag when you’re nearby, and the 50% jump in volume roughly doubles the distance at which you can hear the chime compared with the previous model. Apple also moved the speaker into a harder-to-remove position, so pulling it out to disable a tracker isn’t as easy as it used to be.
Anything outside Bluetooth range falls back on the Find My network, which uses hundreds of millions of Apple devices to report a location back to you anonymously. Only you and anyone you authorize can see where an AirTag is, and Apple doesn’t store location history. Location sharing lets you hand temporary access to a friend or to any of more than 50 airline partners when a bag goes missing in transit.
Each AirTag is 1.26 inches across, 0.31 inches thick, and weighs 0.42 ounces, with an IP67 rating for a meter of water for 30 minutes. An accelerometer and NFC are inside, so tapping a found AirTag with any phone pulls up your contact info if you’ve put it in Lost Mode. The enclosure is 85% recycled plastic.
