Apple’s latest AirPods model now includes heart rate monitoring. Live Translation enables you to have two-way conversations with people who don’t share your native language. Apple says its latest AirPods offer the best noise cancellation yet, and active noise cancellation provides up to 8 hours of playback. Five sizes of foam-infused tips are available, and the earbuds are rated IP57.

Each AirPod contains a photoplethysmography sensor that sends infrared light into your ear canal and detects how much light bounces back, which measures blood flow. When you start a workout, each AirPod transmits the data it collects to the Apple Fitness app. By tracking your workouts with AirPods instead of wearing a smartwatch, you’ll get actual readings instead of estimates, which matters if you’d rather not have something strapped to your wrist during a run.
When using Live Translation with your AirPods, you’re able to translate real-time conversation happening around you. In addition to hearing translated versions of the other person’s voice at a lower volume, your iPhone will show or read aloud your own translations. While you may need an app and a lot of hand gestures when trying to communicate in a foreign country, Live Translation makes ordering food possible again.
Compared to the second generation of AirPods Pro, there was a big improvement made in the noise cancellation department. One reason for the significant improvement is that the new earbud tips contain foam. Because foam tips create a tighter fit in your ear, they block more ambient noise passively before it reaches the electronic components inside the earbuds. With five sizes available, most customers should find a comfortable fit instead of settling for the least bad of three.
AirPods Pro also delivers more playtime with cancellation enabled, eight hours versus six in the previous iteration. The charging case still holds enough power to provide several more charges before you need an electrical outlet. The case is also versatile for charging, since you can use USB-C or any Qi pad rather than being tied to one method.
Active Noise Cancellation is one option for AirPods Pro owners, and the two others are Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio, which combines elements of both based on changing environmental conditions. Once you start a conversation, Conversation Awareness reduces the audio coming from your AirPods, so if you need to quickly discuss something with someone at a counter, you won’t have to remove either earbud to listen.
While older AirPods models offered some water and sweat protection, the new model is also protected against rain and drops into a puddle. Both the earbuds and the charging case carry an IP57 rating, so leaving them in a bag through a rainstorm doesn’t cost you anything.
