Apple’s flagship wireless headphones, the AirPods Max 2, are down to $449 at Amazon right now. That’s a significant drop on a pair of headphones that rarely moves much from retail, and if an over-ear headphone upgrade has been on your list, this deal is definitely is worth paying attention to.

The strong case for the Max 2 starts with the H2 chip, which Apple also put in the AirPods Pro 2, and which increased active noise cancellation by up to 1.5 times over the original AirPods Max. The original were already exceptional at blocking ambient noise, but the Max 2 is genuinely in the top tier of over-ear headphones for ANC regardless of brand, at any price. Bose and Sony both compete seriously in this space, but Apple’s integration with iPhone and the broader ecosystem is an advantage if that’s the hardware you’re running day to day.

Make the Sound Your Own

Personalized Spatial Audio is a feature that lives up to its billing. The setup uses your iPhone camera to map the geometry of your ears, then anchors audio in three-dimensional space so sound stays fixed relative to the screen or the room rather than rotating with your head as you move. For movies and spatial audio tracks on Apple Music, it changes how the listening experience feels in a way that’s hard to explain but easy to notice. Adaptive Audio works in a similar spirit for noise cancellation, reading your environment continuously and adjusting ANC automatically as conditions change, without making you cycle through modes every time you walk from the office into the street.

The switch from Lightning to USB-C on the Max 2 is easy to overlook since Apple’s move away from Lightning is now years old, but it does something more than just standardize the charging port. A USB-C connection enables lossless audio, which bypasses Bluetooth compression entirely. Audiophiles criticized the original Max pretty loudly for not supporting lossless, and it was a fair knock for headphones at that price point. But Apple’s corrected it here.

Premium Build, Premium Sound

Build quality was never where the original Max fell short, and the Max 2 keeps what worked. The breathable knit-mesh canopy and memory foam ear cushions made the original comfortable over long sessions, and that carries over intact. Battery life with ANC and Spatial Audio both running is rated at 20 hours, which is enough to cover a full workday without reaching for a cable. The headphones feel premium in the way that $490 headphones should, and the materials hold up over time better than most of the competition at this price.

Make no mistake, at Amazon’s new $449 price these are still a premium purchase. But if you’re a resident of the Apple ecosystem and you’ve been looking for the best over-ear headphones you can buy on that platform, this is a price drop on a product that’s genuinely worth it.
