The third Evangelion movie, Evangelion: 3.33 YOU CAN (NOT) REDO, was released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan yesterday (along with promotional cheeseburgers). It's been 5 months since the movie hit theaters, so what's been changed between the original 3.0 and the current 3.33?
According to Japanese websites comparing the Blu-ray version to the original theatrical release, it looks like pretty much all the CG animation has gotten a complete overhaul. Additional details, shadows, and light effects can be seen throughout the movie. (Images on the left are from the original theatrical release, images on the right are from the Blu-ray/DVD)
Even subtle things like the direction of shadows have been adjusted for a more natural look.
The previous two Blu-ray releases of 1.11 and 2.22, also had additional scenes and retouched effects, so this is a fairly regular practice for Gainax. However, I watched my Blu-ray copy of Eva: 3.33 last night and the added/edited portions look very natural and work seamlessly with the finished product.
While opinions of the movie itself appear to be strongly divided, one thing I can definitely say is the aesthetic quality is superb, and the .33 upgrade certainly works to enhance that.
Evangelion: 3.33 YOU CAN (NOT) REDO is currently out on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan. According to Imdb, the movie is scheduled for release in the US on May 5th, but the validity of this information is uncertain.
