Last week, some lucky Gamescom attendees got a chance to see new Fallout 4 footage behind closed doors. Many gaming websites have reported on it; the new Fallout footage is not a mystery. Thing is, Bethesda hasn’t actually released this footage for the world to see...not that this has stopped fans from finding creative and sneaky ways of viewing it anyway.
Yesterday, the Fallout hive went into a frenzy as footage from the Gamescom presentation started leaking online. If you were fast enough, you could have watched it on YouTube. As of this writing, though, most of those popular YouTube destinations are dead links:
In response, fans turned to other means of sharing the footage, such as file-hosting sites. These, too, sometimes got hosed—or got overloaded with requests, making it difficult to watch the footage. And so Fallout fans have turned to more unorthodox video hosting services, like Pornhub (NSFW, obviously!!) to host said Fallout 4 footage. Titled ‘HIDDEN CAMERA SHOWS AUDIENCE TEASED BY BIG BUTT MAN IN TIGHTS LIVE,’ the seven-minute-long video showcases off-camera footage of Fallout 4. Hilariously, it’s tagged under categories like ‘big ass’ ‘POV’ and ‘homemade.’ The singular comment on the video reads “Came all over my monitor.”
I’ll be frank. The footage looks like garbage; the recording was clearly taken incognito, which means that the leaker couldn’t be precious about how they were recording the footage. This has not deterred people from getting excited about the footage anyway. Right now the footage has been watched by almost 34,000 people on this source alone. Funnily enough, though, it’s actually one of the better options on the web right now. YouTube is kind of a bust, and downloading rando files from the internet that promise you juicy Fallout 4 footage isn’t great either. Many of the websites hosting the footage are rather slow, presumably because of the high demand for this footage. Assuming you don’t mind dicks and vaginas crowding your peripheral vision (or the occasional pop-up), watching the Gamescom footage on Pornhub isn’t a half-bad choice. (I can’t believe I just typed that sentence.)
That said, the thing that gets me the most about this situation is how Bethesda is handling Fallout 4 footage in the first place. The game releases in a few months. I understand that marketing requires doling out information carefully, but it still feels like Bethesda is being weird about how new footage is released. QuakeCon’s Fallout 4 demo, for example, was not livestreamed. The footage eventually made its way online through Bethesda’s official channels, to be sure. It still felt like a strange choice to livestream many of the other games at that convention, but not one of the most hyped games of all time. Surely Bethesda has noticed that Fallout 4 is driving people nuts?
It’s likely that this Gamescom footage will be uploaded by Bethesda at some point, too. But for now, people are taking whatever they can get—even if it means watching shoddy Fallout 4 footage on Pornhub. I hear they have a pretty active Fallout 4 fanbase, though.
Update 8/13 12:20PM: after a few days, the footage is now finally gone. At last count, I saw over 200,000 people had viewed the Fallout 4 footage on Pornhub. Wow!
