In Which I Overreact To The Homeworld Remake Box Art

Look, I was happy enough that Gearbox was just going to be re-releasing Homeworld so that modern operating systems (and widescreen monitors) could actually play them properly. But that's not what they're doing.

No, they've gotten carried away. In a good way. Instead of simply putting in some HD textures and optimising the code, Relic's classic games are instead getting some more intensive tweaks, so much so that Gearbox has seen fit to change the name of the project from Homeworld HD to Homeworld Remastered.

Here's the gist of the changes/updates:

Homeworld Remastered Collection includes updated high-res textures and models, new graphical effects, and support for HD, UHD, and 4K resolutions. Homeworld's original audio and video artists have also recreated cinematic scenes in beautiful high fidelity.

Homeworld Remastered Collection uses Homeworld and Homeworld 2's original source audio to create a stunning new mix of effects and music. On top of that, multiplayer for both games has been combined into one centralized mode that will allow you to interact with other players like never before. This collection also includes archival versions of Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic, preserving the purest form of the original releases with compatibility for modern operating systems.

Which is all well and good, but look at this box art. The proposed collector's edition up top, and the vanilla versions below. They are perfect. Shit, I'm getting so carried away that I'd buy that collector's edition just for the art book (though I'd have good reason). What's more, the proposed collector's edition even includes a model mothership, so you can park it near a lightbulb then play Adagio with Strings as you fly slowly away from it, sobbing gently the whole time.

Both games will be available for preorder "soon", Gearbox says.
