Sony, Nintendo Battle For Japanese Hardware Dominance

The weekly battle in Japan for hardware championship goes to Nintendo this week, with the Nintendo DSi outselling all competitors. Thanks the strong PSP software sales, however, it was a fairly close race.

The PSP was just a few thousand sales shy of returning to the top spot in Japan, making the portable war a continuing struggle for both parties overseas. The same was largely true for the home console challenge, with the PlayStation 3 outselling the Wii once again in Nintendo and Sony's home territory. Third place current-gen console, the Xbox 360, returns to its typically sluggish sales.

With a few interesting titles on the horizon—a new Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon and a Sengoku Basara spin-off for the DS and PSP respectively—the battle promises to continue. For the bestselling hardware in Japan, from March 23rd to 29th, read on.

  • Nintendo DSi - 57,401
  • PSP - 54,148
  • PlayStation 3 - 22,825
  • Wii - 17,276
  • Nintendo DS Lite - 8,408
  • PlayStation 2 - 5,246
  • Xbox 360 - 4,849
