Maybe we've been a little harsh. Maybe Hollywood's Dragonball movie will actually be good. Maybe not! Without an official trailer, all we've had were some crummy quality on-set images. Now we have a somewhat crummy quality scan! Here's the first official promotional image for the DB. It appeared in manga Shonen Jump, where the original Dragonball manga appeared. (Hollywood got that right!) A translation of text that appeared on the promo:
I’ll grant you a wish…!!
Rumor after rumor but [now] Dragonball live action movie finally comes true!
Director James Wong of Final Destination, and producer the revolutionary film maker Stephen Chow of Shaolin Soccer. Remarkable casts are Son Goku is Justin Chatwin who played Tom Cruise’s son in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, and Master Roshi is Chow yun-fat of Pirates of the Caribbean.All Dragonball fan’s wish are granted now ! We will continue to offer new information to you on Jump Cinema Island !
Another thing they got right: Justin Chatwin's Goku-hair. It's spectacular! Hit the jump for the full image.

Justin Chatwin as Goku [Dragonball The Movie]

The bottom left part of the poster could act as multiple choice question. The question would ask: "Who does not belong?"
Can you believe that Chow Yun Fat left John Woo's Battle of Red Cliff movie to play Master Roshi?
@UmeShoryu: sure. maybe he gets to molest some girls like a true master Roshi!
well i'll be damned... Stephen Chow AND James Wong? sounds like a recipe for manga movie magic. :)
@frank0127:
That, or shit.
This is an improvement over his stunt double haha...
Hopefully, since they casted a lot of no-names...they will be able to use the rest for FX shots.
Rest of the budget that is...
shitt or great ill see this movie no matter what
They really need to call Uwe Boll in to properly fuck this one up.
Jesus Christ, this is actually worse than the set shots.
If Transformers was awesome and G.I. Joe ends up being awesome... and with the unlike possibility of Street Fighter being awesome.. it would be an injustice if Dragonball ends u?p sucking. It honestly can NOT live off fanboyism like the other could have if they sucked (which they didnt so far... probably Street Fighter will but so far...)
But why couldnt tehy have better casting? honestly? I get Goku not being japanese but... come on..
They've really done the movie a discredit by putting the actors RIGHT NEXT to the original character pictures. It's like they're conducting a set of Before and After Shitty Casting Choices profiles.
Also, I'm pretty sure Chatwin got the job purely because his hair could stand that much gel. I see no other reason for him to have the Goku part: his other notable role was playing the guy no one liked in the movie not enough people saw.
The dragan ball movie is like removing a bandaid, we just need to get it over with and deal with the pain.
@SaanZ: Well to be honest, it's not so much Justin Chatwin being casted but the fact he looks so weak and doesn't match Goku physically at all.
It normally takes what, six months for an actor to bulk up sufficiently for a role? eg. look at Edward Norton in American History X or Ryan Reynalds in Blade: Trinity. I'm sure Justin spent some time training before shooting, but not enough. Plus that costume doesn't look very baggy.
Yeah... I'm speechless. I giggled at the thought of Wolverine's hair depicted on the big screen, and hardly entertained the thought of Goku's, but there it is, in evident awfulness (word or no word, it applies here and you know it).
For me, there's an Uncanny Valley for wanting to see adaptations of beloved works. It starts off at the bottom, like robot, intrigue and curiosity that it wants to be like what I know. It moves closer to the Valley as I find out more, like screenshots and press releases. Then it hits the fucking Valley and I want nothing to do with it. At the very bottom of the curve, the Zombie if you will, it's the sick curiosity that inevitably, I will have to see it to believe it, and you will be damn sure I will shoot it in its head. Or it can be like Iron Man, a story about a man and a robot, and be as close to a sexy human you just want to touch.
Actually he looks a lot like vegeta to me. In fact, I would've said that is a rather good casting for vegeta if he could get his personality right.
Are they going to CGI muscles in later? Good lord.
@UmeShoryu:
The plot line is based on DRAGON BALL.
Goku wasn't all that big pre-DBZ. Go look at teen Goku from books 15-17 before Raditz shows up.
If this does well (haha) he still has time to bulk up for any sequels.
wow i just realized this is a dragonball movie, for some reason i thought it was dragonball z.....
turns out that guy doesn't look like a kid at all. seems like he fails as goku.
This might be good for a laugh, and then hours of mind repair. But I'd go see this with my friends to see if we can do some live MST3K'ing.
Justin Chatwin will always be that undercover cop from an episode of Lost during Locke's flashback.
As long as they don't let Uwe Boll anywhere near the movie, it should be fine!
@demonknightinuyasha:
Actually you fail. :)
Might want to go back and read the manga. Goku is in his late teens at the very end of Dragon Ball before DBZ.
You had me at Shaolin Soccer!!!
@TheExiledLeader: Stop. Consumers needs to stop supporting such releases, this is why studios greenlight garbage movies.
This is why M. Bay exists, because people eat up turd like Transformers.
Thanks to the folks who are pointing out this is a Dragon Ball movie and not a DBZ movie. I'm not a _huge_ fan of the series (a fairly large one that will poke fun at it on occasion) so I really don't know the whole story.. but I do know there is a difference between a DB movie and a DBZ movie. :)
Thanks mates.
As for the movie itself, I'll probably go see it. At the very least, I'll be dragged to it by some friends who are bigger DBZ fans than I (own figurines, DVDs, etc, etc). Just hope it's not too fucked up...
@henhowc: I know this is based on DB, but Goku was still pretty strong as a kid/teen. Didn't Bulma shoot him in the head in the very first chapter and he was unfazed by it? If the movie were to emulate the sort of strength Goku projected from the manga/anime then Justin still would have had to put on some muscle to increase his screen presence.
I like to believe the reason for Goku not drawn like a bodybuilder early on is that DB came out during the mid-80s and I don't recall a lot of manga outside of Hokuto no Ken that featured hulking characters. I guess Toriyama's drawing style just evolved over the years. I remember Vegeta was pretty short when he first appeared but appeared taller later on.
悪夢!!!
@Fyren: Except Transformers was good and you're wrong.
Yeah...this movie shouldn't be made.
@Fyren:
I really don't get all that Michael Bay hate. Granted I've only seen Transformers of his, I thought it was a very enjoyable movie. Saw it with about 20 friends after a huge school term. We all enjoyed it a lot. Isn't that the point?
ummm...
WHY!?
*crosses fingers*
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
I have a feeling this is going to be as bad as the first Street Fighter movie. I hope I'm wrong. But I fear the odds are against me.
@Zero_: Luckily you saw the only movie he's made that wasn't complete garbage. I still think it could have been much better if there was a better director though. Pearl Harbor = garbage, Bad Boys 1&2 = garbage, The Island = garbage.
He makes crappy movies which are crap but you are distracted by all the bright shiny pretty stuff going on so you can sort of ignore cheapness of it all.
@string_theory: What about The Rock? I loved that movie.
I just don't get why people have forgotten about this:
[www.imdb.com]
Or maybe they've never known about this '89 classic...
still looks bad.. :s
Anyone else think Chatwin looks more like Gohan than Goku?
He just doesn't have the physical presence that Goku has, not enough muscle.
@Kytano-Skorpius:
So true; "The Rock" is M. Bay's best film ever and absolutely away from anything that resembles(sp?) a sucky movie.
This is not looking good already...
@Wenzel: Goku had little to no muscle in DRAGONBALL. For the last time this is a DRAGONBALL movie. I think people saying he doesnt look like GOKU or whatever should tell us who they think looks like Goku. Because i cant really think of any actors who looks like him at all. Chatwin imo wasnt that bad in The Invisible (i never saw war of the worlds). Im glad they didnt cast simply for the way the person looks. Also if anyone attached can make this movie awesome i dont think we need to look any further then Stephen Chow.
Crappy gelled hair ftw.
And how come he's the only non-asian on the poster?
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH I want to hate this movie I do, and I do.. somewhat hate it but damn it every time I hear about additions to it I get interested a little more.
A. I hate DBZ, and although I've never seen much of DB I will agree it is fairly good from what I HAVE seen. So thats (hopefully) a plus to me, but with DBZ being soooo much more popular among the masses I fear it may end up leaning more towards that side of the story despite its title.
B. Tallish White Guy plays short spiky haired Asian monkey child... wrong in every way.
C. Chow-Yun Fat, right in every way.
D. Live Action, (error... retry, fail, abort)
E. Stephen Chow... ARRGH QUITE TAZING ME BRO. Shaolin Soccer was sooooooo good, and I still yearn to see Kung-Fu Hustle, but have not have the time or money.
I'm so conflicted.
Wow, I never realized it before, but he looks a lot like Elijah Wood.
@Miksho:
well maybe they put the pics next to the actors because no way in hell would anybody know who the suppose to be representing in the movie.
I had hoped they would cancel this shit and go cgi. ffac anyone???
Stephen Chow? Chow Yun Fat? Those 2 names alone made me want to see this movies. Royal tramp, god of gamblers, hard boled, a better tomorrow. Damn those two better make this movie worth while
@dhlt25:
Remember Bullet Proof Monk?
I hope this movie is nothing like it (shame on you Chow!).
@EternalStar: Jeezuz bro, haven't you heard? The internets will allow you to watch tv, movies, and pretty much anything if you can find it online.
I hope it turns out well I do.
That's all we need, real men constipating.
Oh crap...they're going to try for the hair. I was hoping they'd pass on trying to replicate the hair.
I didn't relalize the guy doing this did Shaolin Soccer. While it wasn't a legendary movie, it had some great examples of what could be done regarding fight scenes.
So, how many scenes will have Goku's hair slightly different?
