It's OK. Rub your eyes. I did. But it's true: Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel has told French magazine JeuxVideo that work on a sequel to one of the past decade's most underappreciated titles is underway. And not just underway, but it's been underway for around a year now, with 10-12 staff toiling away on pre-production duties. Good news, yes? Well, sit back down, Mr Bernard Excitey-Pants, because there's a catch: Ubisoft have yet to green-light the project and kick it up into full production. Yes, I'm as confused and angry as you are. No, I have no idea why the hell they're stalling on this.

So where do I sign to ask for this game to be produced?
Me want, now, Ubisoft, do it.
I'm right with you, man.
Do want. No, need.
BG&E sequel? Do want!
Then how about an Eternal Darkness one?
Oh, and Oni needs a sequel.
I hope they make a petition, if solely so I can see hundreds, if not thousands of people sign "CARLSON AND PETEEERRRSSS!"
*insert joke about the game not being able to be played in France here*
I remember playing the first one and was sheerly floored, I agree @RPGr: where do I sign?
Sending an e-mail to ubi now. Still my favorite game of last gen. Loved it to death.
It's going to sell for shit, just like the first one. Great, great, great game, but it's going to sell for complete crap and we'll never see a third.
I want it, sure, but not nearly as much as I want an ice-cold COORS LIGHT BEER, the WORLD'S MOST REFRESHING BEER.
GIVE ME NOW
i remember how great that game was, then i found out it didnt do well and i was surely baffled... i definitely hope it gets the green light and soon...
The first game was fantastic, the game world was extremely immersive. It definitely does deserve a sequel.
Another underrated games that should have done at least "Very good".
I am all up for another snapshop frenzy.
Ubisoft will probably release it to Americans only.
Awesome. I'll buy it. I thought the first one was somewhat over rated, but still really good.
I would buy it
I remember he said he'd do one at London Video Games Live '06. Right after he beat boxed.
I'm serious.
Dear Ubisoft,
Give them money. Give them money now. Or I'll show you why people are scared of violent video game players. With a knife. A big one.
And possibly a squirrel.
Love,
2NinjasTapedTogether
I hate a world/industry where games like Beyond Good and Evil are left on the shevels and all those sequels of sequels get snatched up for 70€. Thats just not right. BGE deserved a better fate, and I hope this sequel ->WICH MUST BE MADE<- will help to set the record straight. But thanks anyway, you reminded me I have yet still to own this. Tonight im hitting ebay to get this for GameCube. It is a well overdue title I must add to my GC game library.
NOT only will I buy a copy of this game, I'll buy ten. No, a bakers dozen.
Beyon good and evil was one of the high points of the last gen, and of my near 30 years in gaming in general, we need to find a petition and get it sent to ubisoft to let them know that the game will sell reasonable amounts. This needs to come to pass.
I bought the first one a few weeks after it launched for only 6 bucks brand new at a Circuit City.
Still reigns as one of the most powerful games I've ever played.
Would buy a sequel if only to thank the developers for making the first one.
Because BG+E didn't exactly smash any sales records when it was released, despite the critical acclaim. They didn't exactly push it all that hard marketing wise, and since it didn't sell 300,000,000 copies in the first 4 seconds, it was labelled a FAILURE.
I think the critical acclaim came well after the fact, slowly building up over time via word of intermouth. I'd never heard of it until a good couple of years after its release, and only after reading some crowing about how good it was on a few adventure game-specific sites. Fallout kind of followed the same path, and well, you might have heard about a follow up to that being developed :P
BGE has had a strong and steady following, and the second would probably sell better than the first on the back of that, so hopefully there will be a viable case for ubisoft to pump money into it.
Great, now if I got a Shenmue 3 along with this, all would be right in the world.
Can they put the original on the disc too? A lot of us never played it.
I remember some rumors about a sequel being made for the Wii.. hope that's it..
The first game was good, got a lot less attention than it deserved :/
I want me some Jade with some Page thrown in for humor.
@cordsie: Actually, I bought the game not long after it was released specifically based on the reviews that I'd read. The acclaim came early and often, but like many other great games (Zack and Wiki comes to mind) it was utterly ignored by the public at large.
My friend and I called 'starkos' starfish-tacos.
@Gustavo: Haha, this confused me so much until I saw the ads ALL OVER the site. Man, who drinks light American beer? : (
BGE rocked so much, I really hope this game gets published!
Awesome, hope it gets the ok. BG&E was the first game I've played that showed developers other then Nintendo can make a decent action-adventure. Now that I've been disillusioned by Nintendo's own efforts in the field, I'd really like to see some progress work in the action-adventure genre.
This must happen, that game had some some of the best characters ever in a videogame.
@KingBroly: heh yes, thats kind of what the problem was in the first place, wasnt it :P
I still cannot for the life of me understand why the first game didn't sell.
It had everything: story, characters, gameplay, good justified mini-games, variety, an interesting gameworld, graphics.
And it wasn't a particularly conceptual or inaccessible game... Why the hell didn't people buy it?!
(Calm down, calm down...)
I played it at the same time as PoP: The Sands Of Time (finished in a day, never looked back).
There is no doubt in my mind as to which is the (vastly) superior game, yet PoP is the one getting sequels and remakes.
...Great, now I want to play BG&E again.
in europe ubisoft killed the game by releasing the xbox and gamecube versions 6 months after the ps2 version's release (thanks to a time-exclusive-deal with sony) with no PR (thanks to the ubidorks). weeks later they cried because nobody bought the game...
ps: the game is rather overrated. the camerawas ok at best and the stealth felt forced.
This is excellent news! BG&E was an excellent game. I think everyone who played it, from the Zelda crowd to the GTA crowd, absolutely loved it which is a hard thing to accomplish indeed. C'mon Ubi, don't be lame and GREENLIGHT this sucker!
@razorangelwings: Americans, some Mexicans, and a few self-hating Canadians.
@cordsie: My thoughts exactly. Despite the first game selling like crap early on, a lot more people have played it by now, and BG&E is considered one of the greats these days. A sequel would have a much higher chance of selling.
Do want. One of the few games I loved that I still think deserves another sequel. That and Max Payne (which will probably get one thanks to the movie).
Ubisoft! Not only should you greenlight this, you should re-release the original so I don't have to pay $25 dollars for a used copy on Ebay. A great game.
Also, what's with the Coors ads on the front page?
A game like this deserves some sort of petition or donation web page or something from the fans who love the first game to get this one noticed. With so many crap games that get made and sell a ton how did the first game fly under the radar? If 50 cent can get a sequal to his coaster of a game then this beyond good and evil 2 needs to be made!
@ca$h: I live in Mexico and I actually haven't ever seen a Coors Light anywhere. Not even at this sushi bar which had over a hundred varieties of beer from all over the world.
Make it happen!
@Nemesis_2015: No-one said the game was perfect. Yes the stealth aspect felt kinda tacked on and tiresome, and the camera was awkward, but damn I know I'm not alone when I say I want to go back to Hylis again.
That world was the most well-realized, charming and downright fun sci-fi worlds I've had the pleasure to play in in recent years.
Note to Yves Guillemot (head honcho at Ubi): Make this game. Now. Please!!
One of the last great games I played on the Gamecube.
A sequel will be greatly appreciated !
@RPharazonius:
Yeah, Coors didn't even leave the Mid-Western US for a long time, it's not surprising they're not international. I was just talking about light beer in general, as I assumed razoranglewings was. I'm sure you've seen Bud Light around, you poor guy :p
I too picked up the game after the amazing initial reviews and believe me, they were warranted. The world, the voice acting, the story...EVERYTHING was top notch.
It was a damn shame that it did not get the sales that it deserved but I'm glad that the creators of the game aren't going to let anyone stop them from seeing their baby all the way through. For that alone, gamers should pick up their next game. These aren't devs that are working on some sort of tired concept or a quick movie cash-in. These guys are passionate about their work and it showed in the first title and I'm sure it'll show in the sequel.
I have no idea how much the first BG+E ended up selling to date, after the initial disappointing sales and then the hype that created what I'd imagine to be a sales spike once it earned it's "Awesome game no one played" badge.
However, if it wasn't enough copies, then it's obvious why they aren't green lighting it.
I thought BG+E was a nice game, and it incporated elements of plenty of great titles together into a fun blend of conspiracy action. I wouldn't rush to buy the game day 1, though. I'd probably wait a couple months.
@vanderblade: If you don't mind screwing with Steam to get it I noticed today it's on Steam for $8.95
Once I noticed it was on there so cheap I made a note of it to tell some friends of mine that have never tried it.
good game it twas ...
@razorangelwings: I can't resist quoting the Monty Python on this:
"We find your American beer like making love in a canoe. It's fucking close to water." :)
PLEASE UBISOFT
PLEASE!! GREEN LIGHT IT!
