So Bash ducked back in to give you the first Gears of War 2 gameplay footage from 1Up/GameVideos.com last night (apparently there was some international video-leaking and embargo-breaking intrigue; we had no part in it). This morning we'll update you with GameVideos' overnight post of two more videos: A CliffyB-free gameplay version (above). And an analysis (after the jump) of the first video, pointing out and freezing cool details that might have got lost in the action. They also analyze Cliffy, but not too closely.
"Gears of War 2" is due for release in November on Xbox 360 only.
Wow. "You can now pick up enemies when they're downed and use them as a meat shield." But can you upgrade your meat shields?

Comments
Gears 1.5, great.
@jynxycat: more like i would say resistance 1.5 and killzone 1.5 etc
Soooooo, does cliffyb look like the gayest dude in the games industry,or am i just imagining things that aren't there:)
@Rickster: WoW great burn, the PS3 userbase is gonna be stinging from that for months to come, bravo
@Rickster: Haven't seen any of those videos, but I'm sure it's true.
Wish game developers would actually take time to make fresh products. Not that Epic has ever made anything that original to begin with.
@jynxycat, Rickster, SlowDeath420:
Wow, this is a terrible way to start the comments section.

I was hoping to see newwww content! As opposed to console shooters as I am, I will definitely get this. Can't wait to go more rounds of coop with friends, and now in colorful outdoorsy type areas with full-on alien armies!
You have to be a real man to play Gears. Right right right.
@SlowDeath420: im not a fanboy, I own both the ps3 and the 360 and love them both
expectations lowered by 100%.
@jynxycat: I wouldn't care if it was gears 1.00001, it's still gears of war.
@jynxycat: Thanks for that valuable input.
@jynxycat: ZZT and One Must Fall were pretty original. Of course, that was quite a long time ago, but still.

And so the war begins...
@jynxycat:
Gears 1 was one of the most graphically intense games of this generation, even something 1.5x as good is a pretty awesome game.
You've seen one gameplay video of one level and you're awfully quick to complain.
If I was a moron that footage would look interesting. Thankfully, I'm a sexy moron.
Why do so many game makers like to make games with such a bland color look to them. It looks great in texture and action, but would some color really hurt?
It's using an upgraded engine to the original, most evident from the new lighting, so while I'd agree it's a "1.5"ish game, the first was graphically stunning for its time (and still is today). A second release on the same generation can hardly improve on it in bucket loads. They've just upped the ante with much more stuff going on now they've been able to fiddle with their code abit. We all know it's gonna sell shedloads so let's all just enjoy it.
This game looks like it is going to be amazing. Bring on the GoW2 footage!!! Bring on the CliffyB jokes!!!
@GPman: Warzones tend to lack color, unfortunate side effect of all the fire, blood, soot. But i understand what your getting at.
@GPman: Come on, it's Next Gen!
But as someone said, this is the manliest game series ever, even more than Serious Sam because it has multiple manly characters. Although there's a lot of homo-eroticism...
Ok, Gears of War is the Top Gun of gaming. How about that?
Can't wait to take down the Locust on the Highway. Where does it? The DANGER ZONE of course!
What's a Dhalsim?!
Mgs3 is MGS 2.5, so what? it's all about the storyline/new stuff.
same applies do final fantasies and crap like that.
(let's not even mention GT "prologue")
@Travezy: Yea, I really don't understand why people are complaining about the graphics.
R6: Vegas1 graphics were not that great, and then when Vegas 2 came out, the graphics still sucked. That deserved a "1.5" comment.
But Gears Of War looked unbelievably good, and still does today. You can't expect them to keep improving the graphics ten fold every time a new version comes out.
I have no idea what some of you guys were expecting out of a Gears of War sequel, but I'm impressed with what they have done on the same platform.
Were you expecting 100-person multiplayer footage? Crysis-killing graphics? An introspective Marcus Fenix? Strippers?
Gametrailers did a comparison video (which they love doing) between the first and the second:
HD: [www.gametrailers.com]
SD: [www.gametrailers.com]
Haha, the "ahhh mah eye's I'm blind" line cracked me up XD. This looks great.
Wow, that's a lot of gray.
This 1.5 bollocks is getting silly.
Name a direct sequel that doesnt look quite alot like the one before, please.
Its like..uhh, part of what MAKES it a sequel?
I dont like sequels myself, tends to be too much of the same for me to bother, but this is what 90% of you have been screaming for so give it a rest already.
On topic..GoW was alright. Had some cool features. GoW2 looks sweet but I probably wont be playing it due to time limitations.
I'm not sure why people are complaining about the colors when KZ2 uses the exact same pallet, if not more than Gears. I'd hardly expect a war torn planet that's being bombarded from orbit to be all happy and sunny with rolling green fields and bright blue skies. Look at images from WWII and it was kinda dreary.
Personally, I think the video looks great. Like others have said, the first Gears was so impressive graphically that it's hard to do some huge jumps but the improvements are noticeable. There were never battles of that size in the first one nor were their such open vistas, let alone crammed full of trees like this level. There's others but it's not like trying to point them out will convince those who are so intent on trashing this game based off of one video of graphics from a game that's still six months out.
@jihadjoe343: Well most WW2 footage is in B&W, so yeah, it's very gray =)
This looks like they're really maintaining that gears combat feel but ranking it up a notch.
Fantastic stuff.
Also, to the first few commenters; Kotaku isn't really the place for you. If it's bitching an moaning you're after, look elsewhere.
Last thing I knew, I joined this site because of the decent opinion sharing and conversationalist nature of the comments section.
As always, a vocal minority are souring it for the rest.
*sigh*
More like GoW 1.99 amiright?
@Lono: Bah, you know what I'm talking about, lol.
Anyway, moving away from colour pallet issues, I wasn't a fan of Gears of War. I found it sluggish, slow, and lacking depth in terms of storyline and replayability(is that even a word?).
While I'm not expecting something spectacular this time around, because I've never thought anything spectacular could come of the generic aliens vs. human set-up, I at least expect a better story and online experience.
Awesome! GameVideos really came through in the clutch...as did Epic
Looks like SDF is out in full force. Not unexpected though.
If I were running Kotaku, then I'd ban anyone making these trollish comments.
I will buy this only if the online isn't so prone to lag as the last one. I loved the last one to death, but mostly because of the online games. The only improvment I am asking for is better netcode. Epic, PLEASE get it right.
Looks like they improved their bump-mapping and brightened the palette.
I'll be happy if the game doesn't jump around as much without reason like in the first one. You can really tell they cut sections out for time.
And please no puzzle end-bosses.
These really do have me excited for the game. Loved GoW1 and will definitely pick this up.
While it looks kinda the same as 1 (as it should, it's a sequel), there are some obvious improvements to the graphics department - especially in the lighting and size of the environments. Here's hoping the final boss fight is more interesting this time around!
What is wrong with more of a good thing? I'd kill for a Mega Man 9 that was exactly the same as 1-8.
This is exactly what I want in a Gears sequel.
@Travezy: 1. GT put a grey layer over the Gears of War 1 footage to make Gears of War 2 look a lot better, and a few people actually played the level they showed again today just to see if it really looked that bad. It did not.
2. Stop promoting GT. I liked the site for all their content as well until I noticed how they fake comparison videos to promote the Xbox360. Now I just watch trailers, David Jaffe and Pachter on there, when available.
+ Watch video
3. Gears 2 looks amazing. But not worlds beyond Gears 1. It's the same friggin' engine for gods sake. Ok, it's UE3.5 - but still. GT is just rubbish.
@Ishmae1: We have to wait and see how improved that really is,as i HIGHLY DOUBT this is running on a 360.
people have apparently never heard of sequels.
'1.5'?... tards.
game looks very good i still think killzone 2 is the best looking console game i seen so far. and heres a fun fact.. GAME PLAY > GRAPHICS
@Candlejack: Did they update the engine to 3.5?I must have missed that, that pretty huge.Remember the difference betwwen 2.0 and 2.5,the improvements were huge.
Maybe if it was on PS3 those Sony fanbois wouldn't be so bitter, they'd be like ZOMFGUBERWTFPWNBBQMSGCREAM
@SlowDeath420: Either they have or they will be introducing it with Gears 2, because I saw a tech-demo of the engine Gears 2 uses. It now features partially destructible environments, better lighting and water effects. Especially the improved lighting is visible in the Gears 2 gameplay footage.
Looks pretty good. I like the alien as meatshield thing and the chainsaw duel (should be fun in multiplayer.) I'm hoping for a four man co-op instead of just two man.
I swear, I ain't buying this game if they don't announce a PC version that has the exact same content. I still haven't bought the first game 'cause they dicked 360 owners on that.
