Even though the game ratings authority in the U.K. says "the average 16-year-old would think everything in We Dare was beneath them," politicians, parents and media there are apoplectic that Ubisoft's ridiculous swinger-party game was rated a 12 - meaning suitable for kids.
"I have a 13 year old daughter and if I knew she was playing such a highly charged sexual game with boys, I would be appalled. It is encouraging under-age sex," said one mother to The Telegraph. Keith Vaz, a member of Parliament and long-time industry critic, called on Nintendo to take action as the custodian of a "family-friendly" console.
"Wii must ensure that there are proper checks and a full consultation before games are graded for use by children. This game should not be released until these checks are made," Vaz said.
Yet one mother of a 15-year-old son found it all harmless. "Its only like a modern day spin the bottle, it's just a bit of harmless fun."
The Video Standards Council - which oversees the rating of games in the U.K. - assures everyone We Dare isn't worth the fuss, despite its marketing as "sexy" and "flirty." Any sexual content is completely implied, he said, and a mini-game that showed characters stripping to their underwear was done so in the context of losing weight.
"There is no sexual activity," he said. "There is suggestion and innuendo if you're that way inclined but you don't actually see anything".
