Apple On the Factory Suicides

This year, ten employees have died at the Foxconn Shenzhen plant. Foxconn produces products for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and Apple. Apple has stepped forward and finally commented on the issue.

According to sister site Gizmodo, Apple has released a statement that it is "saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn". What's more, the company is "in direct contact with Foxconn senior management and we believe they are taking this matter very seriously."

Dell, which has its computers manufactured by Foxconn has also spoke out: "We expect our suppliers to employ the same high standards we do in our own facilities. We enforce these standards through a variety of tools, including the Electronics Industry code of conduct, business reviews with suppliers, self-assessments and audits"

Yesterday, it was reported that Foxconn's exec met with reporters about the rash of suicides, adding that the factory is not a "sweatshop". Today, he showed one hundred or so members of the media the Shenzhen factory, adding that the facilities have 70 psychiatrist to prevent suicide and another 100 certified volunteers. There is also steps to report and prevent suicides.
