Microsoft totally won the race to 10 million in the U.S. That's for damn sure. But worldwide? They're not exactly the leader in the "current-generation console" race, at least not if you include the Wii as a "current-generation console." They may have an impressive Xbox Live user base, but 19 million Xbox 360s sold does not a current gen leader make.
When contacted for clarification about the 360's numbers versus the Wii's—which stood at 24.5 million worldwide as of March 31, according to Nintendo financials—Microsoft reps told us that "Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen high definition gaming console." That emphasis? Mine. They also apologized for any confusion this may have caused.
Hey, it happens. Even I forget I have a Wii sometimes and it's right there, mere feet from my face.

Whatever that means...
"Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen high definition gaming console."
Microsoft for the SPIN
Nintendo said before the Wii came out that they were going with a Blue Ocean approach, "Not competing with other 'next-gen' consoles." I think Microsoft has the right to claim leadership if Nintendo doesn't even consider itself in any competition... even if I do think considering this all a competition is retarded in the first place.
What he means to say is that "Xbox 360 has a larger global install base than the PS3" adding, "Neener neener neener".
This is the force the Wii has unleashed.
It sits so in its own pile of money, it's not even a contender anymore.
MSFT should just benchmark their sales with the PS3.
Oh, way to go. I suppose they can use their own definition of current-gen if they like, but that's splitting some mighty fine hairs to exclude the Wii.
"Even I forget I have a Wii sometimes and it's right there, mere feet from my face."
Mcwhertor, reading this sentence aloud cracked me up
"Hey, it happens. Even I forget I have a Wii sometimes and it's right there, mere feet from my face."
Same here, my wii just sitting in a corner collecting dust. I m going to sell for a ps3 most likely...
Whatever! I own a PS3, and I'm quite sure it's the WORLD WIDE LEADER BY A MILE in next-gen hi-def consoles that are black with a curved top!
This is silly on their part. It's like Sony exclaiming that they have the highest sales of any next gen console featuring Six Axis^TM control capability.
It's a known fact that Microsoft ignores the Wii and sees the PS3 as it's sole competition, so I'm not surprised, though.
Heh Reggie's like 'oh well, I still gets paid bitches'
@kingclip: I lol'd.
@kingclip: Actually, Xbox 360 Elite model is black with a curved top.
Yeah, hate to break it to you.
Don't feel bad, though. The PS3 is the highest selling next gen console that will soon host an online social experience by the name of Home.
@kingclip: lol! Yeah! What he said!
@Michael McWhertor: Even I forget I have a Wii sometimes and it's right there, mere feet from my face.
sigh... sad but true. My Wii is still crying for better games, myself a bit too perhaps.
I predicted this response. It was so obviosly wrong that I was surprised that Kotaku repeated it without commenting on it.
Also, I don't see how anyone could forget about the Wii. For me, the only time I play the 360 is when friends come over for rock band/GH (though I concede it has many more "good games" than the Wii...it's just that there hasn't been a new one for me this year) and I've owned the PS3 for a year and I still don't own a game for it (it's a helluva good BR/DVD player, though.
The Xbox360 is currently the leader in green and white consoles played with Xbox brand controllers world wide.
Xbox360 Elites are black with a curved top.
@Michael McWhertor: LOL! OMG... this is why I love you! They're going to have your ass for lunch! Who? You know who ;)
@karasu is my homeboy: DOH!
@okenny :):
So true.
When are people going to realize... what Nintendo is doing is not having any effect on the other two. The only thing that effects the other two, are each other.
Could somebody call Microsoft and tell them the direction to the nearest schoolyard? -_-
Don't we all, McWhertor...don't we all.
@LedRush:
the wii doesn't have a sh!tload of fps's or point and shoot the target games, therefore it's not regarded as a worthwhile system for most people :/
That's one way to add salt to the wound on the PS3, but alas Microsoft forgets that the race is still on. If Nintendo or Reggie, mostly Reggie, has anything to say about it, he'll make use of the Wii's proverbial penis and spray a golden shower on the both of them.
Since when does current gen=high def?
Btw, anyone else notice it now says "Start a discussion" instead of "Post a comment"? Given many posts I've seen I think it's quite appropriate, especially in these sales numbers fanboy troll baiting posts hehe
current-generation console? thank you Michael, i love you!
@karasu is my homeboy: Crap -- addend my state with . . . and has that dumbass Spiderman font! THERE!
@chemical_eng_mx:
I guess it doesnt mean hi-def since Nintendo isnt doing it huh?
The constant spinning is making me dizzy.
hahahha what a bunch of dicks
I love that pic of Reggie striking an Edgeworth pose.
Hey, it happens. Even I forget I have a Wii sometimes and it's right there, mere feet from my face.
That was just mean. Funny, but so damn mean. Now where did I put my Wii...
@LedRush: Get gamefly. Theres some pretty good ps3 games out there. I dont know though maybe its different for me since my 360 was stolen, and i replaced it with a ps3. So all my games are ps3 games even the multiplat ones.
@kingclip: How about is convex?
And the Wii has sold more Smash Brothers than the PS3 and 360 COMBINED! Take that Microsoft/Sony. >:0
But seriously. That spin was pretty sad.
@EnigmaNemesis: Well, all three consoles are part of the 7th generation of gaming consoles, saying the Wii isn't in this generation because it lacks hig-def would've been like saying the N64 wasn't current-gen back in the day because it was the only console still using cartridges and not moving on to Cds.
They didn't forget about it, they were doing two things: solidifying the fact that Microsoft and Sony aren't competing against the Wii...and sending an "oh snap" to Nintendo.
@chemical_eng_mx:
I am just playing devil's advocate here.
Consoles have been always about graphical enhancements, etc. Not so much storage medium. Nintendo was especially guilty of this. Since now, that Nintendo chooses not to, since it would cost them more than they could bare to compete to do so, it is all of a sudden acceptable. When at one time, it was not.
Is all.
I wonder ... how many x360 gamers play it on a HDTV/monitor, and same thing about PS3 gamers. I know for sure that most PS3 customers know they'll soon buy an HDTV, or get one together with the PS3. I lasted only 1 week without a widescreen monitor for the PS3 :).
[many PS3 games, like Warhawk, are unplayable on SDTV]
@Naelok: Damn you! If you hadn't pointed that out, I never would've noticed...and now I'll have it ingrained in my mind forever. FOREVER. >_<
Redgeworth?
he could have also said "Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen gaming console with a X on it." and if he's going to take the HiDef route shouldn't he discount the ones without HDMI which is all the inital install base prior to upgrades which are still out there
I play my Wii alot more then I play my 360, I will admit I don't have GTA4 yet, but I still have alot of Wii games I'm trying to beat.
I must be in the minority but I don't really see anything wrong with what they've said. The 360 really isn't competing against the Wii because they're targeting different demographics. The 360 is going after the traditional, more hard-core gaming community that seems to have a focus on more mature and fast paced games that are pixel pushers. The Wii is taking a different route by focusing on casual gamers with more pick up and play games.
This is more of a personal observation and doesn't really have any solid facts behind it (just like my statements above) but I don't see many people deciding between a Wii and a 360/PS3, I see people picking it up because they only care about Nintendo games/products or already have a "HD" console.
Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen high definition gaming console.
Meaning they're saying it's getting it's ass kicked by a last-gen system release AFTER it. Nice job Microsoft.
@somarix:
well if your doing a study i play on 56" HDTV
LOL, Excellent! These announcements are getting so spiny Kotaku will need to issue sick bags for its readers.
@yanipheonu:
Can you explain how they are getting their ass kicked?
They are still selling systems.
Still getting exclusives.
Still getting the most games sold per system (attach rate).
Still selling tons of software with record sales, making tons of money.
Still having lots of games developed for it.
etc etc etc
The only "ass kicked" scenarios, are that of fantard banter on message boards. It sure isnt effecting MSFT negatively financially or support wise by developers.
@EnigmaNemesis: I won't argue there, even though Nintendo has made quite a few innovations, it does take it pretty slow to catch-up in technologies.
But as I've always said, the more competition the better for the industry, there is more effort put into things and there is more variety for everyone.
@Kotaku: "Microsoft totally won the race to 10 million in the U.S. That's for damn sure."
No they bloody didn't. According to their own press release, Xbox 360 had sold 9.9 million units in America by 31st march. The Wii had sold 10.61 units in America by 31st march. It's all there on wikipedia, and yes there's a bloody reference.
Honestly, they're just correcting one lie and re-iterating another.
@
