New details on the game formerly known as Banjo Kazooie 3 and Banjo Threeie have emerged courtesy of Game Informer and GameReactor, both via message board NeoGAF. Rare's latest Xbox 360 venture, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, won't strictly follow the traditional gameplay of the previous two colorful platformers, but will have a heavy focus on vehicles and vehicle building. According to alleged details from the latest Game Informer mag—the same issue posted about earlier—the game will feature some 1600 vehicle parts and weapons with which one can customize their ride, from bikes to karts to planes.
A poster, who appears to be from Danish gaming site GameReactor writes that vehicle creation is similar to building with LEGO blocks, that players can edit their creations at any point. The poster explains how a truck creation was incapable of delivering the required amount of coconuts to finish a level, but that a helicopter more suited to coconut carrying was. In other words, if coconut schlepping is your thing, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts will fit the bill.

I'm not likin' the vehicles at all.
I'd prefer it to be strictly platforming.
I'll wait to hear more. But That's not what I wanted to hear.
I don't know. I think I might fall squarely in the coconut schlepping demographic.
Sounds pretty neat, especially with the imaginative folks at Rare designing all these 1600 parts. I'm kind of glad they didn't just kind of make another platformer. Looking forward to tinkering with it!
meh, never played banjo kazooie, but this sounds kinda fun. I want a new conker though!
I'm so glad they made a great platforming series into a non-platforming series. That was a close one!
That is not what I wanted to hear at all.
You have to be kidding me. I want my damn platformer! What other platformer was on 360! Kameo? Sorry Rare, that was terrible, Banjo is supposed to be that!
*upset before I actually see the gameplay*
The whole vehicle thing sounds like a pretty weak idea but I'll wait till tomorrow to pass my final judgment. Don't get me wrong vehicles are great! I just don't want my platformer to revolve around them.
This is my most anticipated game since Perfect Dark Zero in 2005 and I do NOT want to be disappointed in it.
I don't think its moving away from its platform roots- I think this is just an added gameplay mechanic
I am dissapointed...this isn't what I loved about the past Banjo games.
oh come on, straight up platformer come on guys. That's why we cheered so much when we heard about this game
@wealthyman2: the creator of conker said there won't be a new one and if there ever was conker would be killed off in the opening movie
Read this while ago on a few different sites...
Looks like Rare just made Banjo-Kazooie jump the shark. This is terrible. The Banjo model looks bad enough as it is, but putting more emphasis on vehicles than platforming destroys the purpose. Rare has really gone downhill since the last days of N64. . .
Sheesh, make the same game, everyone complains, try to innovate, everyone still complains. I'm glad they're at least trying new things and personally I think it sounds really cool.
@maskedaprentice: Yeah a platformer is what we all wanted/want but 95% of the screenshots have a vehicle in them... I was hoping I would get to run around the world on foot with a bird on my back and explore every nook and cranny there is to be explored..
Maybe just MAYBE I'll still be able to do that and this won't turn out to be
(BANJO KAZOOIE RACING with a little bit of platforming thrown in)
Rare just broke my heart. Really. Just ripped it out and smashed it on the ground.
I'm going to need to break out the Ben and Jerry's.
uh this is still a platform game, what are you guys talking about?? They just added a new gameplay style. If they copied what they did in the past people woulda said "Rare is stuck in the past"
@Nirolak: Who really complained about BK?
The moment that I saw that it wasn't Banjo Threeie I was disappointed and reading the rest of that didn't help. I suppose I'll just go back to the old games and play them to death.
Oh come on guys, Sonic was twice as fun when they added vehicles!............right?
I'm with everyone else till I see some gameplay proving otherwise, I was expecting the first real next gen platformer that should have already come out a long time ago.
Ugh, why are all my favorite childhood game series being systematically destroyed?!
First Sonic turns into a warewolf and now vehicle based Banjo-Kazooie?
I'm fine with change, but whats with the emphasis? It should be on platforming.
@wealthyman2:
A new Conker would be welcomed @ my house.
-------
I'm sure Rare will do a great job.
(Viva Pinata is one of my faves)
@ostartero: Unfortunately you people seem to only be reading the details on kotaku about the new stuff which will be going along with the normal platforming, theres also a link with addition information. Banjo 3 is very much still a platformer. Its kind of funny everyone is condemning it before actually seeing it in motion.
I'm actually really interested in this new mechanic. I know it's not what everyone was expecting, but come on guys, at least wait until you get some hands-on experience before you start bashing on the idea.
Hmmmm ...... this could be interesting. Sounds unique, for sure (can't think of another game that had this feature). Its almost like it has a creation element (like Little Big Planet) without the cumbersome hurdle of creating full levels (like Little Big Planet).
Looking forward to more tomorrow. Hopefully they'll have extensive gameplay footage and not just a weird, quick-cutting trailer.
And its good to see people actually excited about this. There's a vocal minority on the 'net that won't be satisfied with ANYTHING Rare does or doesn't do now that they aren't with Nintendo, but there voices are being drowned out by geniune excitement. Cool.
I dont understand the quick disapproval. If games stayed the same, everyones quick to jump down the developers throat ('gears of war 1.5') if they change it, everyone is up in arms about the change. make up your mind!
Now, more on topic, I think this sounds really interesting. As long it is implemented in a Spore like manner, with a fairly low amount of limitation, it could be a lot of fun. I don't understand why they felt the need to use the Banjo Kazooie brand rather than starting a new IP, but it is what it is. I'm cautiously optimistic about this title.
Thank god, not another treasure hunt. For a while it seemed like Rare was only making those kinds of games.
Seriously though? Vehicles?
@Teh Emo Penguin: I call a jump from platforming to non-platforming Kingdom Hearts II Syndrome.
I really wasn't impressed when I read about this earlier. If finding parts and building vehicles played a small role then fine, but it seems like it's taking center stage in the game. I mean the name of the game is nuts and bolts, and most of what you're looking for are parts, and new additions. Maybe this sounds awesome to you, but it's not my cup of tea.
... damnit.
WHERE IS BANJO THREEIE?
God, I bought my 360 on the basis that I'd have Banjo Threeie sometime in the next year or two... so much for that.
I love the look of the game, but I really have no idea how it's going to work out. If it's great, I just hope it'll get a PC release at some point.
@Aethyr: Wait. I just read the part about the coconuts. What the fuck, Rare.
@StagnatedLives: It's because Gears of War really wasn't that revoltuionary...just a pretty game with cover-based gameplay.
People(myself included) are complaining about this new Banjo because the Banjo games were the best platformers of their time. The Banjo games did things better that most of the platformers of the PS2 generation, so when we see this news we are just asking "WHY?" because the 360 has a complete lack of good platformers.
Also, when MS bought Rare Banjo fans dreamed of how awesome the next Banjo platformer could be with a huge budget and cutting edge technology. With this news those dreams are kinda crushed.
I'm going to wait until I can either try the game or see some reviews, but I've got doubts. If this had been a new Banjo game in the mold of the first two, it probably would've been enough to get me to finally buy a 360.
But this? I'm not so sold on it. I'm not going to write it off, but Rare's going to have some convincing to do.
@Yeux de nouilles: Given the game's console roots, I wouldn't count on that. Isn't Viva Pinata the ONLY one of Rare's games that got a PC release?
This was a guaranteed buy for me... Up until today. I wanted Banjo Kazooie as a platformer... This vehicle stuff is indeed jumping the shark. Congrats Rare, your legacy of failure keeps on surging forward into the 21st century.
@Aethyr: Remnants of Donkey Kong 64?
Looks cool. I cant wait to play it. Ill probably rent it first. I dont know though.
Those graphics look incredible nonetheless. I'll buy this just to show Rare they still mean something to me. Even if they did ditch Nintendo. >:(
I'm not sure if you guys read the original post but it mentions that all the platforming is still in their... this is another layer put in the game aside from the great platforming you love. If I'm understanding people correctly, you are bitching about getting more... *face-palm*
Just as long as the construction/vehicle aspect is a game play enhancer and not an eradicator, I'm down. I'm all for Rare trying new stuff, but when I say that, "complete genre change for series" is obviously not what I mean, so here's to hoping Rare keeps innovative platforming as the main focus. And I'll hang on to that hope until such a time as more info and/or game play footage is released that dashes that hope against the jagged rocks that is (except for VP) Rare's portfolio since they stopped making games for Nintendo.
Wow, I love the concept. Very unique. Just what i would expect from the series.
Wow.....I was really excited about this until I heard about the Vehicles....Bad move Rare
Bummed. I literally waited 8 years for this. This was as big of a letdown as the lackluster NiGHTS sequel. Only 2,000x greater.
Banjo looks like Yogi Bear!!!
@okenny :): "won't strictly follow the traditional gameplay of the previous two colorful platformers, but will have a heavy focus on vehicles and vehicle building."
the "heavy focus" is the problem here for me at least.... and if this is played with the MS wiimote then there are 2 things that i don't like... but i will wait to say something bad about this game ...
This thread makes me want to punch my computer in the face for letting me read such garbage.
@RonCey: your computer has a face?
*eyes fellow Kotakuites*
Don't be so quick to judge people! Let's wait 'til tomorrow, hopefully we'll get some footage and impressions.
Oh how I've missed you Banjo! Not in Diddy Kong Racing tho; you were slow and had awful handles. Now, Tiptup, that guy was a beast!
It's probably a april fools joke.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not that familiar with Banjo-Kazooie, but comparing the series with Donkey Kong Country, Rambo, Enguarde, Squawks, etc. were all derivative of vehicles. That's how I see it being integrated. 1600 parts makes it sound like building a vehicle will be a headache, though.
@CHU BOI: agreed, I'm not a fan of the series so i wont be picking it up anytim*e soon, but I'm sick of people bashing stuff before they try it. new options can only mean that it will be better.
I'm glad to see that Rare is at least trying to stir up the formula, but there comes a point where change distracts from what made the series likeable in the first place. I'm not judging Banjo Kazooie 3, but I'm going to have to wait and see if the addition of vehicles is all that it's made out to be. It might be a step up from previous installments (think RE4), or it might be the inferior of the N64 platformers if the additions prove unreliable or too far out there.
Rare is walking a fine line. If they pull it off, good for them. If not...well, their beloved fans won't be too happy.
