Like Amazon, GameStop appears to be in dangerously short supply of Nintendo's upcoming balance simulator Wii Fit, with employees of the company writing to us today bringing word that pre-orders for the title have ended, officially, at some stores. Wii Fit pre-orders are no longer being offered on GameStop.com, with warnings that the game is "Not For Sale", asking consumers to "Please check back soon to see if more are available."
Checking in with the brick and mortar stores, we've heard conflicting info. Some have responded that their Wii Fit pre-order program has already ended, with some saying they're still taking reservations. Others further specified that reservations will be taken, but that GameStop cannot guarantee first shipment availability. If you're desperate, you may want to try your luck at more than one location, especially if you're planning on joining the eBay scalping ranks.

They're people actually wanting Wii Fit?
@Ieatbears: Obviously...
@Ieatbears: Yep, I'm one of them. Can't wait!
@Ieatbears: The casual gamer scene. Careful, I hear they bite and spew poison.
Kidding. There's high demand for this actually. Not huge, but high. At least in Europe.
@Ieatbears: Duh, it promotes exercise. Exercise freaks, soccer moms and pop culture tools will be buying it.
YES! Another thread that will explode into people judging others based on what video games they do or do not like. Commence with the name-calling!
I'm actually looking foward to it. Even though I don't have a reserve...
yet.
@KM91: And me. Apparently I'm a pop soccer freak.
It looks fun.
Holy crap. I'm a fan of Nintendo (not fanboy, very big difference) but this is a little ridiculous... I've underestimated this much larger market... Yeesh.
@Ieatbears:
Many people are interested in it. Personally, it's not my cup of tea. I want compelling gameplay experiences. I also go to the gym after work for exercise.
I'd be willing to bet this is like the rock band "shortages" last december, when miraculously every store suddenly had an over-abundance of copies 2 days after christmas (at least in my area)
@Ieatbears: No Nintendo is just preordering them all themselves in some kind of strang brainwashing/marketing campaign
@DigitalHero:
Likewise. Though you have to wonder how many people are buying this for a "workout" regimen.
When actually details of the Wii first surfaced, I wasn't sure how the new Ninty would do. Never imagined it would be so uber-popular. I am really curious to see how Wii Fit will do in NA. Yes, I realize it's looking to sell out nstuff at launch, but will the board be popular in six months? I have doubts about the long term popularity of Wii Fit in America, but I guess we will all find out. Regardless, it's definitely another reason why this is a great time to be a gamer.
Has Wii Fit not launched in the Americas yet? As I live in Ireland, and I got my copy the Friday before GTA IV launched.
I plan on grabbing 2 and craiglisting 1 of them. Though I doubt they'll be in as high demand as the wii.
@kathartik: I don't see the complaint here. Most parents want the presents BEFORE Christmas, not after. Do you think parents enjoy saying "Oh ya, sorry about being low on gifts, I'll be sure to get you what you want in the next few days!"
There WERE shortages of Rock Band before Christmas, and then the demand slowed down substantially.
My wife preordered it already. She is not a mom.
This isn't a big deal here. GameStop does not get everything N, S & M publish. Just like Halo 3, SSBB, and GTA IV, it will be available at other businesses. GameStop has lied to the consumer before and they will lie again to get your money. There are other places besides GS to shop. Stop being sheep, people.
@Furysetzer: Very true, but GameStop has no incentive to lie here. They pushed the hell out of reserving Halo 3, SSBB, GTA IV. Why would they lie about shortages of Wii Fit?
I expected this ... that's why I pre-orered it the day it went into their system. It's just not that easy to make tons of hardware - everyone should have known it was going to sell out.
@Furysetzer:
I beleive you mean "Sheepole"
If Amazon is out, then obviously there's an issue.
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: Too right, tricky bastards. No one actually wants this "game" - just Nintendo up to their usual.
By the by, I have it and it's been very good for me and my gal to get motivated and active.
I feel for the 60% of Americans as they step on the scale and are told they are overweight and then place the Wii balance board in the basement next to the treadmill and other weight loss devices.
I consider myself pretty "hardcore" a gamer but preordered for my folks, who I will be giving my dusty Wii as soon as I finish Mario Galaxy.
I wasn't into this at first, but I think I may pick it up. I'm pretty active as is, but I think it will further help prepping my girl into gaming like Smash Bros. did, plus she likes to exercise.
@nonpareil:Good. Give it to people who will not be slipping in cracks about dust on it via internet gaming blogs.
I also go to the Gym for excersize, but we are gonna buy wii fit on the house anyway. It would be kinda cool for mornig before-work warmups.
is it funny that i don't want one? more for everyone else, i guess.
Hmm... I believe that the Game Crazy I work at is still taking pre-orders on it. It's actually been fairly popular. It seems to have more than just exercise stuff on it. The DVD also shows games like Snowboarding.
I actually had no desire to get this game at all. That is until I got home from work today and started checking out the new Nintendo Channel. I randomly looked at the Wii Fit video with my girlfriend and we were suddenly intrigued. I especially like the whole yoga aspect of the software. I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really think some people could get a lot of use out of it.
One thing I don't think people realize in regard to the demand of Wii Fit is how much money is in the health and fitness industry. There are always those people who are prepared to drop some serious cash on the next new thing to lose weight and be more healty. Get an older crowd that probably picked up a Wii, since they saw it at a party, and now a new piece of software is released that really is geared for them and their lifestyle. Nintendo has struck gold. Again.
Yeah.. Wii fit boxes don't store as well in a Gamestop storeroom as well as DVD cases so I'm sure they have to stop to make sure they can keep pre-orders in stock...
...That's what I'd like to believe but these stooges have probably long over-extended the amount of pre-orders they could possibly hope to fill and probably don't have the allocated units. It'll be the Nintendo shortage all over again :(
I'm hoping my wife buys it for me at some point. :)
Is that a problem???
Huh... I just noticed from this pic that they have the big "protection" gummi-sleeve on the Wiimote in the Wii Fit pics, something I didn't notice on the J-version.
@PhiCancri: good point re: fitness industry.
Still a rather decent BMI scale for the price.
Perhaps some are going to buy it just for that, just as some bought the PS3 for being a cheap Blu-Ray player.
I am glad I made the decision to preorder at my Gamestop a few weeks back. Can't wait.
/soccer moms are hot
@KM91: Yeah, man. Only fuckin' tools exercise! Screw exercise. It used to be cool then it went all mainstream and it got lame.
My ToyRUs had to stop selling pre-orders for Wii Fit, as we reached our max number we could sell, which has never happened in the 6-8 months or so I've been there. (This includes Brawl, SMG, GTA4, Halo 3, GH3, Rock Band)
It being on Oprah(At least that's what my Dept. Supervisor is telling me) will probably help make it hard to find at launch.
It's $90.00. That's insane. I still regret my $50.00 Wii Play purchase. I didn't need a third remote, and Wii Play is no good. I have a feeling Wii Fit would leave me feeling the same way.
I don't own a Wii and wouldn't buy one just for Wii Fit, but would be interested in checking out similar games for other consoles. Yourself Fitness was surprisingly good for what it was.
@LionheartAce: this is why your the preplexed gamer and Nintendo is rolling in money.
:)
I bet your feeling awed, disgusted and jealous.
Well, i know i do.
*molest his wii*
what?! it's MINE!
D:<
@Woden501:
Game Crazy is no longer taking preorders on Wii Fit either. Check your intranet memos.
I guess I should turn around the pre-order into some WiiproFit online.
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: I knew it
