Doom news is good news. so we'll be seeing this in 2010?
Blah. Who knows when this will come out.
Hopefully they will take a note from Doom 3 complaints... and make the game more interesting. I was bored by level 3 after going through the same looking corridors over and over.
It didn't get interesting till the end when you go into hell and the caverns and fight all those monsters.
Woohoo for Doom! I can't say I was the biggest fan of Doom 3, but I love the Doom series tremendously. That makes me happy to hear.
Awesome! I was hoping that they would do a Doom 4. Despite what the common opinion was, I absolutely loved Doom 3.....Can't wait.
Five bucks says this is out before DN:F :)
Maybe the main hero will remember to bring a long his Torch flashlight this time, or maybe he'll shop at Hammacher Schlemmer, and buy the six mile flash light ( [www.hammacher.com] )instead of the dinky piece of shit he used in the last game..
Its about time, I can't wait to see id Tech 5 in action.
GG!!!!!!!!
My only experience with Doom 3 was with the Classic Doom Episode 1 mod. That thing was comedic gold.
Hopefully they can make the game more interesting. When Doom 3 was released it looked great but thats pretty much it. It didn't really excite me. I can't say i'm really looking forward to a new one either.
@nitz: Like in the year two-thousand-and-never? Let's hope not.
"DOOM is part of the id Software DNA "
i hate the term DNA in marketing speak. if i hear it again i'll shoot someone. preferably marketing guys.
I enjoyed Doom3, sure it got pretty predictable after awhile with spawns/doors opening behind you but it was still fun.
In the movie, the gun's had built in lights. When did Hollywood become more practical than the games industry?
cool
I'd be happy being a janitor at id.
I need new pants.........
If only I had talent and/or experience.
So, this your first time on Mars Marine?
Actually No, I've been here before, its just the Xbox Crashed.
maybe this time they'll drop the whole 'skarey' approach and go with what Doom is best at: blowing up demons with a gun bigger than your own body
Eh, I really enjoyed Doom 3, so the more the better... and Doom IS part of id's DNA.
Sweet. But what about DNF?
Come on gents. At least get that out. Please?
I love Doom so much. I got Doom 2 at the library when I was 8 and it was the best time I ever had with a videogame.
Can we have some sweet melee and body slamming moves? I thought Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban deserved oscars for that.
...hah.
@edb87: That's 3D Realms, not id.
It's about time, those freakin aliens have all the good titles. Go TEAM EARTH!!!
Hey, cool!
Maybe this time id will create some original mechanics instead of trying to remake System Shock 2 but on Mars and with demons.
@diablofreak: Make a DOOM WAD, shoot 'em there ^_^.
Hope it's more like the old DOOM games.. DOOM 3 was a good game, but was very different from DOOM and DOOM 2.
Doom used to be a cool, fun game. Now I don't see it as much more than an engine display. I dunno, actually DO something with your franchise?
Final Doom just got that much less final.
@relic1980: Haha oh man I remember WADS. My favorite being the evil dead remake with all the swearing included.
That and the cross over cable to link two pcs with DWANGO and running batch files. Ah good old 14.4 Kbps. days.
Remember when they said Doom III would be the last Doom game? Yeah, me too. Not that I'm upset they broke their promise, I'm rather glad, it's just kind of funny. I'm all for more Doomage, and hopefully they'll get this right.
Oh and lets have another Quake game while we're at it. One that harkens back to the first one cause that was my favorite, I loved the style.
I hope they make this Doom like the early titles. Doom 3 was lacking what made Doom fun in the first place: rooms filled with a ton of monsters. With Doom 3, you were lucky to fight 2 imps at a time.
What happened to Rage? Was that dropped?
Quake 5: Team Arena please...
Doom 4 is nice and all and I'll play it (PS3) especially if it has m/kb support but I really want a new Quake that goes beyond Enemy Territory. It would be like old times on PC...UT, Quake3: Arena, AvP, Serious Sam and Half-Life...ahhhhh those were good times...
I highly enjoyed playing DOOM 3 on the XBOX over XBL with a friend. Playing Co-op Campaign wasn't done in many games back then. One guy holding the flashlight and the other shooting up the demons.
I never finished it Single player tho.
I still play DOOM3 for PC (the best version) and I think it holds up very well against most current FPS graphics. So I can only imagine that it will blow everything out of the water (looking at you Unreal Engine) when it is finally released.
Hurray for more space marine FPS games!
At least this is the original space marine FPS.
I hope it's better than Doom 3.
Sounds cool but what the hell is happening with the new Wolfenstein game?
It was announced in 2005 and that was it. I havent seen any news on it since. I hope we see Wolf soon, cuz` i cant wait anymore.
So id is starting on their next tech demo, cool.
Doom 3 was the most technically advanced remake of early 90's run-n-gun gameplay ever made. It's shouldn't have surprised anyone, they SAID they were making a spiritual successor to DOOMs gameplay and that's exactly what they did. It's just that no one expected them to completely ignore all the other advances in gameplay that have happened since then, which they did.
The Painkiller and Serious Sam games did it better, if not as sexily.
It's a beautiful engine though, I spent a notable amount of time in the game just watching how dynamic shadows could play across their normal mapped curved surfaces and moving geometry. The most stunning real-time re-creation of claustrophobic industrial spaces ever. Too bad it's not so good at anything else.
I'm looking forward to this, those guys can create some stunning eye-candy.
@Zazu_Yen: I agree that it was a big technical advancement but Painkiller and Serious Sam were WAY more fun.
To be honest, at this point I could care less. id is really great at eye candy and always has been. But I'd much rather spend money with a company that is working to advance AI or gameplay then making another great looking un-fun game.
We have Crytek to do that now id. You are old news/starter wife!
@exedore: id isn't responsible for the new Wolfenstein. I think it's Raven that's working on it.
Doom 3 was a cool game and I hope that Doom 4 come for PS3 and X360.
Speaking of Delayed games, where is Commander Keen 6: The universe is toast?
Needs to come back as a psp/ds game.
Woo! I loved Doom 3, despite the criticisms.
The "BOO! MONSTER!" gameplay got old, but I loved the bits that mixed it up. The level in Hell was completely awesome.
Less suddenly opening monster closets, more of the awesome. Please thanks.
Doom is good, but I'd prefer they resurrect Commander Keen.
I would love to be on the development team, if only as a product tester and QA specialist, for the sole reason of correcting all of utterly idiotic, exasperating game-design mistakes make in Doom 3.
Example: "Guys, I know you like having a dark, creepy atmosphere and all, but this whole idea about not being able to have your flashlight out while shooting is f*!@# horrible! MMmmkay? It's like getting punched in the nuts in the dark, mmkay? Do you like getting punched in the nuts in the dark? No, of course not, nobody does. Now go f!@&#ing fix it.
[i23.photobucket.com] For those who forgot what Doom 3 looked like here's a screen shot.
I hope that it is closer to the originals. ^_^ I still play them almost daily...
Here's hoping that there is actually a game to back up the engine. Doom 3 was a great engine that really wasn't used with a good game until Quake 4.
I liked Doom 3, but the monster closets were a bit much and instantly spawning monsters behind you kind of got old. The "No ducttape or zipties on Mars" problem was kind of silly as well. I understand that guns don't normally come with flashlights attached, but I think just about anyone in a situation where they have to pick between being able to SEE what is trying to kill you and being able to SHOOT AT what is trying to kill you would work on fixing that problem kind of quickly.
Nitpick: Having to go online to get that door code kind of sucked, nothing like saving, quitting, going to [www.martianbuddy.com], writing down the code because years of video games have given you an attention span of 30 seconds, starting the game, loading and typing in the code!
(If my computer at the time wasn't having a hard time running Doom 3 as is, I wouldn't have minded. But it was! :-P)
The Universe is Toast was supposed to come out in '92. Keen 1-5 are still available via Steam. And Tom Hall has often stated he'd get started on the next Keen as soon as he gets creative rights back.

@OUberLord: Prey, actually, Quake 4 isn't exactly what i'd consider 'good'
Doom 3 was ridiculous, zombie cupboards and spawning things behind you, not being able to hold a gun and a torch...god that was stupid....
But for all that it was fun. The limitations made it more scary for me. I loved Doom 3, precisely because of it's half-baked whonky ridiculousness. It's like going to see a Hammer Horror film - blood and some jumpy scary bits, but nonsense overall and a good romp.
@Adrock4: lol ... it wasn't THAT bad. All I can say is finally!
Let me guess: they won't touch PS3 so EA or Ubisoft will have to dain wasting their time doing it.
I love how people refer to a flashlight as a torch. I always pictured an angry mob searching for a beast in the woods when I hear someone talk about using a torch.
