Resistance 2 will feature eight-player co-op which will have its own story, characters and rewards, Ted Price, president of Insomniac Games, told the folks at today's UK Sony Gamers Day.
Multiplayer will support up to 60 players and include Chimera, again, it will also be structured in a way to bring back a sense of intimacy. There will be squads within these mammoth fights, making the game feel more personal and filled with skirmishes instead of giant, faceless wars. The game will use some sort of system to make sure you always respawn near the same group of players, so you can really start to gun for them.
R2, which is six months from hitting shelves, will also include persistent levels which you earn by getting points for things like helping out your team.

Crap.....Guess I need a ps3 now.
SWEET!!!!!!!!!!
gamespot has a liveblog up of the EU press meet...why no Justin TV?
R2 is top of my xmas list. Loved the multiplayer in the first.
The game is sounding to shape up well. Can't wait.

So they are using the two year old Battlefield 2's biggest features of huge MP and squad leader spawning?
I seriously cannot wait for this game.
I'm hoping for 4-player split screen (I'll even take 2 player split-screen) co-op action where you can link up with up to 4 other PSTRIPLES. We're working on getting our 3rd PSTRIPLE in our apt.
At this point, Resistance 2 might steal some of Killzone 2's hype. From the sound of it, R2 will offer more than KZ2.
...which you earn by getting points for things like bonus points.
Oooo....I'm rewarded for getting points...with POINTS! Count me in! :)
Looking forward to this game and hoping I will have time to play it. I've still got a 2007 backlog. I need to be independently wealthy.
old news except for the level thing.
Got to say... Resistance 1's multiplayer was weak. It was as if they made a multiplayer games based on 1994 multiplayer game modes.
SNORE.
Heres to hoping Resistance 2 actually has some innovation in the multiplayer facet.
@huginn: And no one is complaining, except yourself that is. Believe it or not, people who own consoles actually want to be able to play with more than 16 people too.
Multiplayer sounds cool. Not too many console games offer that kind of large-scale battle experience.
In terms of single-player, etc., I hope they up the ante from the previous game. I couldn't help but feel that the first one was slightly generic and meh.
I want this. I hate FPS games. I hate myself.
Despite co-op being my gaming panacea, I'm pensive about 8 player co-op. My pool of PS3 owning friends doesnt number that high, and I'd hate to be forced to pull from a random pool of strangers. I'm hopin they scale the levels for smaller parties.
I really want this game. I love co-op, which is why I like RSV series. This will be sick!
If they deliver like they did on the first game, I think I'll be happy. Everything moved so quickly and fluidly, it felt like I was playing a PC FPS.
Can't wait to see what kind of crazy new weapons you get in this one. And 8 player co-op is OMG.
will also include persistent levels which you earn by getting points for things like bonus points.
erm....what's that supposed to mean?
@Maldron: I'm with you man. My irrational needs cover Haze as well.
Mmmm delicious new Insomniac game.
@Shin-Kaiser: Ranks, I assume.
@Cruz: I will be your friend....
@Maldron:
funny, thats how I feel about KZ2. I dislike FPS' and even I'm happy for that one.
...it will also be structured in a way to bring back a sense of intimacy.
My girlfriend would heartily disagree.
8 Player Co-op Campaign would be great, too bad my friends and I have no urge to get a PS3.
Maybe in a few years when the next-gen consoles are coming and the PS3 is cheaper I can convince my friends to get the PS3 & this game to play for a fun weekend.
@gibfather: Why do you think Killzone 2 got pushed back into next year...?
'structured in a way to bring back a sense of intimacy'. Yeah I've felt the rape-age included within games lately has forgotten the hugs and cuddles.
If you want to hear more of the technical side of what the guys over at Insominac are doing on R2.Check out their Full Moon podcast on itunes.It's pretty informative,if you are into the development of games.
@Rebel Without Applause: Well you need something to play for the 2 months a year,at least,that your 360 is in the shop for:)
This is exciting news,now bring on the screens.
Do 4 player splitscreen... then we're talking.
Enjoy - hope it works :)
I finally played through the original, and I wondered why I had waited so long to play it. This game made me enjoy a FPS and I didn't think that was possible. Can't WAIT for the sequel!
"There will be squads within these mammoth fights, making the game feel more personal and filled with skirmishes instead of giant, faceless wars."
But I don't want skirmishes. There's 1000 other games that offer skirmishes on consoles. I want the giant war. Give me the giant war!
I have to say I am still a little sad to see how many people disliked Resistance: Fall of Man.
While it was a little slow to start the game really took off as you played. It was like it was the opposite of most games, it got better the deeper you got.
This was especially true on the harder levels, as you really had to learn how to use all the weapons. I never thought that I would end up liking the Sapper, but when faced with charging enemies it was great fun.
If Resistance 2 is even 1.1 times as fun as the first I will be feeling the joy GTA IV is giving me right now in six months : )
@John-irl: Of course it's to avoid competition between the two...but in terms of features, R2 seems to be raising the bar while KZ2 is focusing on graphics. If the online in R2 is improved and KZ2's is mediocre, how much of a sell would that be?
60 players‽
Oh yes, I used an interrobang. I'm that impressed.
Can't wait for this. The first Resistance was felt super rushed, but on the verge of being something great at the same time. Hopefully the rush will be gone and they'll finally pack in all the awesomeness that they just glossed over in the first game.
@huginn:
Wow, someones in a bad mood today.. Either that or you got something against the PS3.
(Money on the latter)
@SlowDeath420:
2 months for a fixed 360? Where the hell do you live? It took under 2 weeks for me. But luckily I have multiple 360 consoles & a Wii to keep me occupied. Not that i'm saying having no console to play would make me want a PS3, lol.
@edhe (xbl):
Yep,it does.If you can handle 60 players all firing rockets,with explosions and no lag..then it should be fine.
I like the idea that they are redoing myresistance.net into a facebook social type of thing.
@gibfather: The way it looks,even if it gets poor reviews,its gonna sell like crazy,mark my words,take my email down if you must and email me to make fun of me if i'm wrong,but i won't be.So theres likely no need to take that email down:)
@Fallible: I never said it was a bad thing, but I am worried. Immitation when improved upon and done correctly=good
The 64 player 'war' on the consoles on an untested psn will be interesting to see how it holds up. Squad system wars are great if done right.
Getting a PS3 is slowly looking to be a sweeter deal, a solid FPS online experience like this is a nice step in the right direction for someone like me.
It seems that there will be several different objectives distributed among the squads so that two squads will be competing for a single objective while the other squads do their own thing. I like that they're finally elaborating on the multiplayer modes. I really looked at those big numbers as compensating for something when they were all that made multiplayer special for so long. I'm not impressed that your game can boast a bigger number than others, that's empty bullet-pointing. I assumed there would be more substance to the multiplayer, and it seems to be percolating to the surface now nicely. Also, Killzone 2 has at least 10 times as much hype than it deserves, a terrible pedigree and not a single interesting gameplay feature? I could pretend that it's going to be the next CoD4, but I don't see where I would get that idea beyond blind hoping.
They should enable the player to unlock different Chimera styles/skins just as they did back in R1, though it would probably be surprising if they adapted the unlockable Chimera's fighting styles as well.
@gibfather: Thats what insomniac seem to be making a name for doing, however Guerrilla still have to prove they can make a good game on PS3. I think Sony will probably use the two to cover both bases, have KZ2 to show to the press as the "AMAZING HD MULTIDEMIMENSIONAL GRAPHICS"..and then have R2 that goes beyond the graphics, and has the gameplay to match.
I don't like simplified warfare on consoles. I am not asking for ARMA, but look how FOW turned out. It became Battlefield Lite.
I am more worried about how PSN will handle the stress.
Or you can go the Kaos route and blatantly lie that your game supports 50 players.
@Rebel Without Applause: Yeah the first time...my first lasted 8 months,then for the next 3 the longest i got out of it was 3 weeks and on the 4th they sent me one that didn't play game discs.Which was 3 weeks ago at which time i said enough is enough and pulled a switcheroo on walmart,incidently my switched out 360 came with a COD4 disc in the tray,a sealed box.
Refurbs on store shelves or walmarts somehow reclosing and taping up boxes.I don't know but that still bothers me
@Rebel Without Applause: Odour de la Fanboy.
@huginn: I understand what you're saying, but the forty player experience R1 offered seemed to work effortlessly. I can only assume this will work just as well.
@SlowDeath420: That is one hell of situation!
@Fallible: Keep that fanboy shit to yourself, nitwit.
Wait you guys are just NOW reporting this? This has been news for months...
@Fyren: OFP and ArmA BEST.MILITARY GAMES.EVER.Holy Shiza i thought i was the only North American here who knows the greatness that is Bohemia Interactive
@Fyren:
I'm assuming it'll be a lot like Warhawk with dedicated servers and the like.
@Rebel Without Applause: Coming from the person who said they'd rather not game at all than play a PS3, I don't really think you're in a position to be calling anyone a nit wit.
@Harteex: that was in the first one, at least for offline.
@huginn: BF2 will be 3 years old in june.
On one hand, 8 player co-op sounds epic and full of win.
On the other, I'm still the only person in my social circle with a PS3.
Regardless, I can't wait for this one.
LAG.
@Fallible: Getting offended that I don't play the one console you love makes you a huge fanboy.
