Killzone 2 Dated for 2009

Killzone 2 will be hitting the Playstation 3 in February, David Reeves told journalists gathered in London for Sonys Gamers Day there today.

Not a whole lot of other information about the release, but several sites report that the game will be playable to the press both today and next week during the U.S. Gamers Day.

The news came following an announcement that LittleBigPlanet has been pushed back from a September launch date to October. SCEE also sales of the Playstation Portable, Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 in Europe and apologized for the delay of Home.

  • Whatever they need to make it good. I think Resistance 2 wil tide people over until then anyway.

  • I'm fine with this. Less friction between Resistance 2 this way.

  • So will this be a Halo killer?.

I never did finish Halo 3, just stopped playing after the second level since no one wanted to co-op and never touched it since then. Then again, I never played Halo 1 or 2, all I got was Madden in college.

  • @Sparx: @AkirasCrow: Agreed.

  • Glad this info is out..but it's not a big surprise.I think a lot of people were expecting 09.

So far, what looks like Sony's only AAA title for 2009. God of War being perhaps the only other exception to this.

    Hope it's good!

  • Delaystation.

    2008.. er.. 2009 BITCHES!

  • I bet this is more of a marketing decision than a programming one. Resistance 2, Home, and Little Big Planet are huge titles that will push Sony to dominance this Christmas and releasing Killzone 2 in that frame would just put it in direct competition with Resistance 2. This makes a lot more sense to me to space them out and give Sony a strong opener in 2009.

  • After a stellar year of FPS in 2007, does anyone else think that '08 is (especially now) looking a bit quiet for that genre?
Quality wise, that is, no doubt there'll be plenty FPS that are fit for nothing more than shelf-filling.

  • @huginn:

only AAA title? Maybe you should check again

  • good so R2 is gonna be pushed more for holidays....and it deserves it

  • So know its Haze this month, then Resistance 2....good shooting times.

  • @huginn:
    2009:killzone2,gow3,probably finalfantasy,granturismo5,wardevil(don'tknow if it's aaa...)and probably one of gatewaty/eight days....
    known until now...

  • This better be one of the best shooters ever. The expectations for this games are going to be tremendous. They are setting themselves up to fail.

  • @steliosco:

I doubt either of those last 2 get there but at the very least:

    KZ2
    FFXIII/vsXIII
    Twisted Metal 5
    GoW3
    GT5
    Uncharted 2

  • @steliosco:

    Final Fantasy in 2009?

That must be some fantasy you got going on over there...heh

  • I thought 2008 has games...looking at 2009...good lord.

  • This really shouldn't be a surprise.Look at the information released about Killzone 2.Very little and putting it into the crowded end of the year right beside Resistance 2 is a bad idea.Plus technically,I don't think it's there yet. Probably,April 09.

  • @enewtabie:

Yeah, but I always find it very disturbing that if people don't hear something new about a game every month they automatically go into a frenzy and start speculating delays and such. Are we so damn bored that companies aren't allowed to keep secrets?

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 10:09 AM on 05/06/08 *

I'm disappointed. I was looking forward to this one almost as much as LittleBigPlanet. This makes me sad.

Can't wait until I hear more about Infamous.

  • After playing Killzone 1, I can honestly say: who cares?

  • This is disappointing...Guess my DelayStation is just gonna continue to gather dust after im done with MGS4...

  • @Sparx:

Nature of the beast I guess.

  • Image of huginn huginn at 10:18 AM on 05/06/08 *

    @steliosco: @Sparx:

Officially announced for 09. Alot of the titles you named are 'planned' for 09, but half of them will spill into 2k10

GoW could be Q4 09 but it's too soon... FF13 has no shot at a 09 release. Twisted Metal isn't a AAA title based on hype at this point but looks good for 09.

GT5 is a who knows release given how we're not sure if we are getting the buyible demo next month or not.

Other titles like the next RaC and or Uncharted 2 games are also unconfirmed but 'rumored'

I'm not worried that sony will have the AAA titles, but 09 might be a shallow year.

  • Jesus, is that 3.5 years to wait for a poster-boy title?

    Awesome.

  • @huginn:

Do you have a source for FF not making 2009 or are you just pulling stuff out of your ass?

  • well i think we are all hoping ff13 makes it here by christmas 09. anything after that is a big dissapointment in my book.

anyway, i, as im sure opther are, am getting tired of seeing games years before they release. killzone 2, little big planet, ff 13, mgs4, even prototype.

  • It's amazing Resistance will beat Killsnooze 2 with 2 iterations. Insomniac might as well take over Killsnooze 2 development and get it over with.

  • @Fyren: Please stop saying Halo killer.

    Hell, anything-killer sounds silly.

Watch out guys, Blinx the time sweeper is a Mario killer.

  • @ohhello: I agree that this won't be a halo killer, but a lot of things seem to be halo killers these days. "Killer" being something that takes a lot of the popularity and hype away from halo, so: CoD4, GoW, GTA4.

  • I dunno, I don't mean to be a pessimist, but when I hear sites like Gamepro say 2008 is going to be the year of the Playstation 3, I can't help but be a bit skeptical.

All this trashtalk I've been hearing from Sony fans, yet many of PS3's biggest games keep getting pushed further and further back, spilling into 2009 and beyond -- not to mention "Home," which just continues to be something of an embarrassment, and in all likelihood, not that appealing, when all you want to do is play your games, not play the equivalent of "Second Life."

Sony needs to really start delivering, because Xbox 360 already has a head start, and the delays to PS3's most anticipated titles aren't helping.

Metal Gear Solid will be dropping soon, but I'm not sure how many consoles this game will push. As a single-player, stealth-action title, it doesn't share the same market appeal as a game like GTA IV or Halo.

Killzone 2, however, could be a real winner, but here come more delays.

And I don't expect Haze to be anything extraordinary. A bunch of dudes painted in bright yellow, high of happy drugs, fighting guerillas in camouflage -- gee, guess who wins?

Resistance 2 will likely appeal to PS3's existing base, but I don't think it's a game people will be buying PS3's for.

Little Big Planet -- from my standpoint -- is a fantastic looking title that could really gain widespread appeal, but it needs to drop sooner.

Part of me wants to buy a PS3, but I still need more justification -- i.e., more of these exclusives now!

  • Still not sure why this game is hyped so much to be honest. I played Killzone 1 and was unimpressed to say the least but Sony has been pushing this thing as if it's the second coming and people seem to be eating it up and asking for more. Let's just remember that the same guys that made KZ1 are making KZ2...

  • oh yeah, this game is still getting made? I forgot all about it, along with all the other great PS3 titles that still haven't seen the light of day.

  • @Ulquiorra Schiffer: I do. I really enjoyed Killzone 1, and Liberation.

    Power to the Helghast!

  • Image of huginn huginn at 10:45 AM on 05/06/08 *

    @Sparx: Speculation really.

Anyone's guess is good at this point.Even Square doesn't know

Usually it takes Square 5-6 years per FF, added to the fact they are working with a new development engine and are working on a new (and often hard to code upon) system in the PS3. I'd expect delays verse on time given those conditions on the speculated date of Q4 09

  • @thegunshow: 2008 DOES have games, but I think a lot of this is just strategic planning to carry them through the holidays.

  • Image of Candlejack Candlejack at 10:46 AM on 05/06/08 *

@DugDawg: MGS4 is online and people are storming the beta servers for quite some time now. You got some things mixed up. Also, are you serious when you say MGS4 doesn't have the appeal of a Halo 3? If that's so, how come analysts and journalists alike agree that Halo 3 didn't push 360s like it should have? Why do 360 fanboys cry for MGS4 on 360 when it doesn't mean anything let alone as much as Halo?

Don't judge HAZE before you played it. I'm downloading the demo right now and I will soon give my input on that.

Killzone 2, however, could be a real winner, but here come more delays.

Killzone 2 could be a winner or it could be a major fuckup, but do we really care at this point? The 2008 release of it wasn't exactly seen as a console pusher anyway and launching both K2 and R2 into the same window is stupid from a business perspective. This is a delay that makes sense. If this game is scheduled for 2009 then people will just get more excited for it around Christmas.

Resistance 2 will likely appeal to PS3's existing base, but I don't think it's a game people will be buying PS3's for.

Bull. Shit. People are more excited for that game than LBP and Killzone2 together, speaking not only PS3 owners here.

Little Big Planet -- from my standpoint -- is a fantastic looking title that could really gain widespread appeal, but it needs to drop sooner.

Why? Because Too Human or Fable 2 haven't been pushed back ages on their own? Do you want a mediocre game that doesn't deliver or a game that takes 3 months longer and rocks your socks off?

Seriously, GET REAL. Now. You're one of the worst and most stupid trolls I've seen in a long time.

  • I regret buying a ps3 so soon.

  • @huginn:

Killzone has never been even remotely close to A status....let alone AAA.

  • the playstation three truly is a piece of dogshit.

  • Man...a trifecta of delays. Home, LBP, Killzone 2. At least Resistance is on track.

  • at E3 2005 Sony showed us their "Real gameplay" from Killzone 2... note 2005!

  • Not that I had high hopes for this anyway, but what's the PS3 exclusive lineup looking like now this fall? I'm sure we'll find out more at Gamer's Day next week (was that new R&C DL game confirmed?), but its starting to seem kinda slim after MGS4.

For the record, and I'm honestly not flaming here, but Little Big Planet could be getting a bit too much hype. This is Media Molecule's FIRST game, even though they are filled with a staff of former Lionhead employees. I suggest reeling in expectations a bit because this game could be decent-to-good and end up a huge disappointment to people expecting "The Next Big Thing" ...

  • @Sonovius: Funny, that's what I call my friend's broken 360.

  • @ShirtGuyDom: SHHHHHHHHHHHH! HUSH! Don't jinx it!

  • There's so much good crap, I think a 2009 release for Killzone is smart.

Of course, that is a European date, so who knows...the American version might still hit X-mas time.

If they are going into 2009, I recommend they wait until March so gamers are hungry again to spend money.

  • Hope the gameplay's better this time around. Otherwise? Yawn and pass.

  • Image of ManjiKengo ManjiKengo at 11:08 AM on 05/06/08 *

This getting pushed to 2009 is a big blow to the Sonyfanboy ego. That's it. Nothing else.

It gives them more time to polish up the game. Maybe do something about the terrible ai I keep hearing about from my former sm.

  • @Candlejack: Whoa there, cowboy. Calling DugDawg "one of the worst and most stupid trolls I've seen in a long time" is a little over the top.

I undestand you disagree, but let's keep it civil. The guy wasn't attacking the PS3, just stating his opinions -- to which, I think you forget, he's just as entitled as you are.

Your rabid vitriole aside, I agree with some of what you said, but I do not agree with one -- that delaying KZ2 makes sense.

The concept of wallet fatigue doesn't apply to discretionary purchases like this one unless much larger quantities of product are concerned, ie. 10 games instead of two that a customer might be looking to purchase.

Also remember that the most common complaint of PS3 owners is that there's very little to play on the system.

That means there's pent up demand, not wallet fatigue. Er go, R2 and KZ2 should both get pushed out ASAP if Sony is looking to use them to push console sales.

Better apologize for Home. I wanted that dynamic advertising experience last year, dammit!

  • to save some time they should make one of the levels a flashback to London to fight gangsters and another on the plains of Africa fighting lions and elephants.

Then we can stop waiting for those two games a well.

  • @Ulquiorra Schiffer:

Umm...Halo is still one of the most played XBL titles, it hasn't lost popularity at all...

  • Image of Candlejack Candlejack at 11:21 AM on 05/06/08 *

@DaPress: I don't know if it's over the top considering somebody is bashing all the PS3 has down the pipe this year. That's trolling out of the extraordinary if you ask me. It's as if the guy is wearing green Xbox shades and looking at every game with them. Ridiculous.

I take your point, however I cannot agree anymore that there is too *little* on the PS3. That was true in 2007, but for me it now is a thing of waiting for the huge, epic games to roll in. I've got the variety I wanted so far, just not the BIIIIIIIIG games like MGS4 and Final Fantasy, if you catch my drift. By no means is there too little to play.

  • @Candlejack: I was talking about the "big games" in terms of there being little to play on the PS3. And while that might not be a complaint of yours, I hear it often enough to merit attention.

Ironically, the late releases of games like Oblivion (which I'd definitely call an epic game) on the PS3 have been a nice way to tide over some less patient people.

All I'm saying is you don't sit in a position of starting a year behind your competitor with what is arguably a weaker opening slate of games and say it makes sense to delay big titles going forward so they don't rub against each other in holiday sales.

  • All aboard the delay train!

    *Train slows into a stop*

  • Part of me wants to be disappointed because I was looking forward to Killzone 2 more than Resistance 2. But I guess Sony is doing the right thing here. Releasing both games in the holiday season of 2008 is probably going to cannibalize sales. And Resistance 2 is more than enough to satisfy first person shooter fans for the holidays. And that's just first/second party. There's going to be Haze, another Call of Duty game in all likelihood, and other third party first person shooters. It's usually a crowded genre.

  • We have a amazing amount of talented commenters here...yep.

  • @Elemence: you could always sell it man.

  • Another LBP delay?

    Damn!

  • @nolifedopestar (PSN: noliferuin):
No can do, was a gift... =P

I really wish Sony Fanboys would get their heads out of there asses...This company deserves little praise...in this next gen...Their online sucks compared to XBL, and this system is riddled with Delays...FFXIII? I doubt it'll be out in 09 considering they can't get a working Demo pushed out...Metal Gear Online was the biggest disappointment for me thus far in this PS3 year...I know its a beta but the gameplay is terrible...I mean I know MGS4 wont be anywhere near MGO...Im truly looking forward to MGS4...always been a fan of Kojima and his work...Killzone 1 didnt do it for me at all I thought it was overhyped and when it came out that excitement led to disappointment...Resistance? Never played the first one but I'm planning on giving the second one a chance...GT5 Prologue? Single player is fun but its garbage online, I cant even play with my friends.
