Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two Interactive Chairman, may have enviable cheekbones and impressive compensation, but what he does not have is a grasp on the software issues surrounding Grand Theft Auto IV. With Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s locking up during GTA IV play sessions, a twelve step "fix" from Rockstar Games support and a host of anecdotal solutions that aren't yet a cure-all, you might wonder where Strauss has been this past week.
He answers CNBC's Michelle Caruso Cabrera's question about any post release GTA IV glitches very confidently—and incorrectly—saying "No, you know, no, none whatsoever. I'd say the only issue is that someone came up to me yesterday in a restaurant and said my thumbs were hurting from the weekend!"
Tee hee! Oh, Strauss! Are you the chairman of fun, too? At least I'm not the only one suffering from stabbing thumb pain born of constant sprinting.
We're not sure if Strauss is being shielded from technical issues or doesn't want the CNBC viewership to know about GTA IV's mysterious freezing problem, but with multi-thousand post forum threads continuing without an official working solution it's hard to swallow this from senior management. GTA IV's performance problems may be limited to a small minority of its owners, but to claim that it's free totally free from technical issues makes you either dishonest or woefully uninformed.

How is this possible if Ive found 2 glitches already.
One were I float accross a fence when jumping on it and moving the stick across.
Another were I jumped into a wall of the dinner to end up in a land scape of only black and polygons
Despite those the game is amazing either way.
From someone who has the freezing issue.. grr on you Zelnick, DAMN YOU ZELNICK!
Meh, turning off the PSN seemed to work. :( I just wanna be able to play online soon.
I'd be more surprised if he didn't. Tech support told me it was being worked on, so it's being worked on. That's all I need to know.
Not only is no game glitch free, GTA4 (and every GTA game before it) is more glitch-ridden than usual.
But of course, this guy is referring to the freezing issue, not every day glitches, I guess.
He doesn't really need to understand the technical side of it. If it was the Rockstar project manager saying that this would be a different story, but this guy probably doesn't even play video games, let alone understand what a glitch is.
Tee hee indeed!
So does that mean they won't release a patch? I believe the fragmentation theory now, as it seems whenever there are lots of police cars on screen, that is when the game starts to pause for a few seconds, and it is always than.
Either way, the game is great, but freezing is a huge deal.
I'm sure it's the same kind of thing as with the 360's red-ringing. For me, I've been RROD'd a bajillion times, but there are so many more out there that have never had it. It's possible that the percentage of people experiencing the freeze is minor compared to the people who don't have it at all.
Instead, I believe I may get my next RROD soon as I have to use VF4 as a boot disc to get the damned game to read as a game and not a DVD.
Wow... it's a great game, but it's full of glitches and bugs. Most are harmless, but still.
oh you know ole zel, the "zelman," the "z-ster," he's such a kidder.
@hikkifan1986: Zelly! The Straussinator!
I think his comments are tailored to the CNBC viewers. I have a feeling they don't play many video games, except that one where you trade stocks online.
@Rabidsquirrel: Try just disabling the media server connection. That's another reported solution, without having to kill the PSN.
How about that glitch that keeps you on the loading screen at the beginning of a multiplayer match until you reset the console? Are you accusing my own eyes of deceit, Levi Strauss?
there's no such thing as a glitch/bug free game, esp for such huge game.
What a handsome man.
@Kenny: Perhaps too handsome
@Kenny:
Indeed. Especailly his lucious thick hair.
@Luke Plunkett: Eh, he's no Stone Phillips. Couldn't win a gravitas-off with Colbert. :)
Incidentally, I finally had the freeze a few days ago.
I solved it thus: reset the console, and signed off of PSN.
Standard, eh? It didn't stop there. I then loaded my game and saved again (overwriting the previous save), then Quit out of GTA4 and signed back on the the PSN.
Haven't had any lockups since.
I think the saving system is just screwy sometimes.
gta4 locks up on me randomly but that was because of something with the network. since it seems to be always trying to stay connected constantly, a hiccup would cause it to freeze (not to mention it would never freeze in my long multiplayer sessions).
this was something i tested thoroughly with the 60gb ps3 and turns out turning off the internet on the ps3 solved it. it's not to say though that my piss-poor router causes those hiccups too.
Someone missed their very first day of Video Game Making Class. Not going to mention any names, but you know who you are sweet cheeks
@Evil Tortie's Mom: No, but with that name and those cheekbones, it'd be one hell of a fight
@Evil Tortie's Mom: Mmmmmmm, Stone Phillips. He gets two snaps up, a twist, and a kiss!
(No, I don't bat for that team, it's a semi-obscure reference to "In Living Color" :p)
The "tee hee" and "chairman of fun" got me. nice. Thats why I keep comin' back.
"Glitch" to these people means "show-stopper." If there's some major problem, but it only happens for a minority of owners, then it's not a problem, and they push it out of their mind. Nature of the business, folks.
Oh, and that "sore thumb" joke was sooo gold. I bet some PR dude got a raise for that one.
Working overtime tonight, Mike?
That guy needs a reality check! my game for the 360 has been freezing left and right, and only GTA IV, my other games played fine, then while on the phone with rockstar support my console red ringed. dont really know who's to blame here but it sucks! now im 25% done with the game and wont be able to play it for a month, wonderful.
Yes, it's totally glitch free except for the glitches.
My thoughts fall on "woefully uninformed"; I take it you don't really need to know anything about your games to head a game company though, you know, it helps.
I wonder how long before this come backs and bites him in the rear?
should have filmed the chase i had where i hit a curb funny and wound up falling for about 3 seconds in a screen of blue before it crapped me back out onto the road surface
Only gripe I have is the collision detection system. Absolute garbage.
Kind of takes away the realism when your entire head is planted inside a wall.
I've yet to freeze or RROD. I am just cruising along.
Seriously, why be mad at Zelnick? The man is a suit, and will say whatever he has to to ensure the security of his company's profits and public image.
Indeed, either he's lying outright or somehow completely unaware of these problems, but either way, this behavior should hardly be surprising.
Additionally, it's a good to remember that the majority of people that have bought this game are probably not technical in any way and so don't know to look at the Rockstar / Take Two forums. Instead, they get their news from....you guessed it, television.
suffering from stabbing thumb pain born of constant sprinting
If that's not a zinger then I don't know what is. On a side note, anyone know if shoes affect Niko's running speed or am I just delusional?
I once had a thug glitch through the ceiling to land in front of me and unload a shotgun in my face.
I'd hardly think CEO's are informed of technical glitches that are not prohibitive i.e. game crashes in 20% of game copies. CEOs aren't paid by shareholders to know the technical minutia of their products.
This is not going to end well.
Theres ZERO way he doesn't know about the problems. I would be fall on the floor surprised if they didn't know before the discs were even pressed.
Of course on CNBC he's talking to investors who are more interested in if they should buy or sell Take2 stock; so I'm not too surprised he downplayed it.
But totally denying it, c'mon did he think people wouldn't know? really? really?
Lol, makes me think it would make for a good SNL weekend update bit. ; D
@Snuffbox: They don't need to know about something in their number 1 franchise that could possibly be a PR issue while in the middle of a hostile takeover by a bigger company with the money to spare while being sued by shareholders?
Whew. Thank god! I was just imagining that I couldn't play the latest big game release on my $600 doorstop. What a relief.
...what's that? I'm only playing it now because I got the 360 version? And my buddy is having the same problem with the 360 game? Damn!
Is he related to the guy who plays Lee Adama in BG?
I've seen just as many glitches in GTAIV as Saint's Row. In fact Saint's Row's glitches were better as they never left me trapped and needing to kill myself in order to continue the game.
I didn't realise he was promoted from flying Vipers to Take 2 CEO! Is this how BG is going to end?
To be honest, I tend not to rest my hopes for software solutions on the shoulders of Strauss Zelnick. Not that he couldn't fix it, he could do anything, but I understand that people with this kind of talent have to use it for the good of humanity.
Also, how come this guy always looks like he'd made of cardboard?
Speaking of handsome...
I wonder who the most handsome commenter on here is.
I highly doubt a trained executive would have the means to understand the word "glitch" - don't hold it against him.
There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!
There are no glitches, proof is my copy hasn't glitched at all. Meaning the game itself is not glitch, the code that is, maybe the printing of some copies or badly taken care of 360s are at fault.
the servers are now stable online. no more freezes for me.
GTA4 froze on me dozen times now... both single & multiplayer loading... but it works when it work... in-game glitches are plenty... ol' school stuck on the wall... random vehicle pop-in...
@Orionsaint: That's a very interesting point. It's interesting because these inconsistent glitches were once exclusively a PC thing, what happened? Well consoles aren't really uniform anymore.
Yeah, whatever Apollo. You also defended the Cylon collaborator Gaius Baltar.
He looks like the lovechild of Lee Adama and the G-man
Seriously though these disembodied car horns are driving me mad.
He would have been better off saying anything else instead of outright denying the possibilty of any problems whatsoever.
wow. what a spectacular company!
He just lost points in my book. I've had the game freezing issue as recently as yesterday, when it was occuring 10 minutes into the game. I cleared the cache today and haven't experienced any freezes today, but I've read plenty of posts from others who stated they did the same thing and it still froze on them.
I found a bug of floating cars. You think video proof would help to change R* mind?
[smg.photobucket.com]
Oh, you silly silly man. DO you really think lying to the uninformed masses would get more copies into more hands of gamers?
Oh wait...
GTA IV is bug free and my ass is a sculpted monument to perfection.
@CyberSkull: Do you have a pic on facebook? =D
Hoe naive of him to admit such a thing outloud. Besides, a 3D GTA with no bugs? What kind of alternate dimension does he come from?
GTA 4 is pretty damn buggy.
My friend came over to my house today, and spent about half a hour playing it.
In that time he managed to get stuck inside a ambulance, and ride a UPSIDE DOWN MOTORBIKE. It was amusing and not game breaking though, so YAY.
It's not just a river in Egypt...
